This from is from Stewart Mandell (Athletic), about how the big TV bet on college football consolidation at the top.

That you'll gain more casual fans who don't follow CFB closely, to offset the smaller fanbases who get left behind and drop off.

Except the college football product is shitty. Even shittier than the giants. People who regularly watch nfl and not college will find it hard to watch unless it is a marquee matchup, even then it will be with passive interest

The answer is wrong. CFB is doing it's best to NASCAR itself to death.

I'm an Iowa fan. If Iowa someday gets cut out of bigtime CFB I will still watch Iowa, but my scorn over getting cut out will mean I will never watch the "upper levels" of CFB.

We're fans of our schools and our state teams. Those allegiances don't transfer.

And that guy is wrong, Billy O'Clanahan in Southie don't give two craps about CFB. He's too focused on the Sawx, Bruins, Pats, and Celtics.

I hope college sports burn to the ground.

These super conferences suck.

I would have rather seen a power 8, with a 12 team playoff.

100%. The day Ole Miss gets cut is the day I stop watching that level of college sports.

They're betting on Billy Bob in Arkansas that's a die hard for Alabama fan despite never going to Bama or even stepped foot in the state of Alabama. They are marketing to the dipshits that get their gear from Walmart/Fanatics despite not knowing how to get to the campus' without a gps running. They do not give one single shite about the people who fill the stadiums. They want to make college sports as boring and corporate as possible to appeal to people watching on the tv that couldn't tell you who the head coaches of Bama were between Bryant and Saban. They absolutely do not care about the collateral damage to the other sports or the universities from this because DAMN IT there's a Georgia fan in South Dakota that has got to get that G sticker on his pickup and he's willing to spend $15 for it which means he's willing to buy the cable box with the add-on sports tier to watch the Georgia games and more importantly - the commercials.

I just don't see casual NFL fans tuning in on Saturdays enough to offset a true consolidation to 20-24 teams. It's why none of the other off-season football leagues have really taken off - without enough diehards it just doesn't work.

That’s the thing, when major CFB is eventually consolidated to ~30 teams, every game will be marquee.

The next round will be cutting programs like Purdue, South Carolina, Kentucky, etc and the elite programs will bundle their TV rights like the NFL.

That’s the endgame here.

Mandel’s answer assumed the big city fans have lots of free time and interest in another league.

I’m skeptical since college football is also occurring during the NBA season, essentially all of the NFL season, and the MLB playoffs.

People have relatively finite free time and will make short-term exceptions for one-off events like a winter World Cup or weird timing for the Olympics, but that’s not 13 Saturday’s every fall.

The large amount of small fanbases is what make college sports unique. The pageantry and dedication of fans happy with a 6-6 season all of a sudden winning 10 games or going 3-9 with a win over an 11-1 rival is what made the sport truly great.

Every school has its own traditions, every school has its own rivals, every school has its own trials and tribulations.

Unfortunately commercialization is going to turn CFB into NFL Jr which is ultimately a loss for everyone involved and will be the downfall of the sport because why watch juniors when you can watch pros?

I just think there are more casual sport fans who will tune into USC vs Ohio State or Texas vs Alabama than 4th generation Oregon State families who refuse to watch out of spite which is ultimately what TV is betting on

College football got too good in the 2000s

We had something amazing and once the rest of the world caught on it was inevitable they’d destroy it.

It’s like a quaint little small town that becomes popular and blows up.
It eventually loses all the character and charm that made it a nice place to be in the first place.

More than Oregon State and Washington State? Sure. But how many schools? At some point you'll reach (and knowing TV execs likely surpass) the critical mass point.

This is 1000% correct.

I can say this as someone not from the south and from somewhere that college football isn’t something I would’ve ever been exposed to naturally but watching the games on CBS in the 2000s is what got me into it and then the emotion and story lines were like crack. The 2000s were so great that the world caught on

It’s becoming the NFL lite for the top 20-30 programs. After that, who knows. But the mess that the other sports will have bc of this will be something to see.

BTW, I'm not worried about Iowa getting cut out. By every metric out there it is a historical top 20 program including viewership and revenue. You know who isn't? One of our main rivals in the Minnesota Gophers. That would suck if we lost that rivalry and tradition.

That would turn me off.
