You used “irl”. You’re in middle school

So you would like to go back to #1 vs #2 no questions asked? That’s crazy

Goodness talk about making the regular season meaningless

So some fans don’t want a playoff because someone could get injured and cause a loss, but they are fine with a team being eliminated before September because they lost.
As for meaningful regular season games in the 90’s - I agree they were awesome. And they were awesome because they mattered. The playoffs will bring way more memorable games.
Also, how many memorable games were never played that we never got the chance to watch because of having no playoffs or only a 2 team or 4 team format? My entire childhood consisted of bowl games matching up #1 vs. #4 or #2 playing #6 because of bowl tie ins. We have been robbed of classic matchups for decades. That is why a playoff is awesome. Teams will actually win or lose on the field.

Wow!! We are getting closer to everyone being participants and everyone that gets in receives a participation medal.

Four was perfectly fine IMO.
Prior to 2014, nobody was trying to make a case for the #5 team in the country to have a natty shot. Expansion to 12 was unnecessary and, the guy you’re responding to is correct. It was simply about money.

You didn’t enjoy watching the playoffs last year?
In 2018 Georgia’s only loss was to Bama in the SEC Championship game and they got left out for Oklahoma to get blown out.
4 teams wasn’t enough. 16 is too much. Maybe 8 would be perfect?

Personally, I found it more interesting than enjoyable. It wasn’t bad to watch obviously, just didn’t really “feel” like college football if that makes sense.

I’d honestly take that outcome over conference championships not only not mattering, but possibly being a detriment to what you ultimately want in this format (good seeding).

I just don’t see a problem with 4 teams. In the UGA example above, they lost their conference championship game. I get it, the “eyeball test” says they were better than the Sooners…but they weren’t the best team in the conference. A format that says that doesn’t matter makes both the regular season and championship week meaningless, and for me, just my opinion, that’s really hard to enjoy.

I am with you. But 26 is too many and so is 16.
12 is the right number if the people who make the rules can all sit down and determine how to seed them correctly.

The BCS was the most accurate way to do this.
They don’t give a frick about accuracy. They give a frick about ratings and money.

I get what everyone is saying and there are merits to all except just 2 teams.
But the problem has always been unbalanced conferences, unbalanced schedules, and biased polling.
Examples from my life- in 1990 there was 1 undefeated team remaining at the end of the year. But because that team started out unranked it took a miracle to get a share of the Natty over a team that had a loss and a 5th down. This happened because of conference bowl tie ins and western media were voting lockstep for any team from the west while the eastern media eat each other.
Maybe 24 or 28 or 32 are too many. But that is still better than what we’ve ever had. Playoff matchups will be awesome and lead to memories for future fans like many of us have from the Miami-FSU and Bama-Auburn games.
I love that my kids in their early 20’s will NEVER have to spend energy on “what if” scenarios like my generation has. We saw ND beat UGA. We saw Penn State beat SMU. We saw Texas beat Clemson. We saw Ohio State beat Tennesee and Oregon. We never had that EVER before. We all spent January’s of the past arguing about who would have beat who IF THEY HAD THE CHANCE. Now, any team with a pulse has a chance. Excuses are over.
In my opinion Ohio State is the first legit National Champion ever.

quote:How is 12 significantly too small? Do you think 4 loss teams who hadn’t beaten a top 25 opponent all year deserve to be in a playoff?
28 is absurd but 12 is significantly too small.
With 12, you already had teams arguing they were deserving of a spot after they went 9-3…..which meant they went 5-3 against teams that had a pulse and padded their records with 4 wins against inferior non-conference opponents from G5 and FCS.

It’ll go to 16 within the next 3 years

But we have also watched rematches, including Ohio State beating Oregon last year after losing to them earlier in the same year. Why is one win more important? They were 1-1 head to head.
Yes the rematch score was more lopsided, but one team won the first game and actually won their conference (without an embarrassing loss to a hated rival).
This isn't horrible, but is far from a definitive version of who is best. We certainly don't need more mulligans if we don't have the option of best of series like in less physical sports.

This will be the last season with 12 teams.
14 to 16 teams comes next year

The current 12 team format gives everyone a shot. Personally, I’ve always been in favor of an 8 team field (5 conference champs and 3 at-large) since that still keeps every regular season game meaningful.
They don’t have room to complain. Ole Miss lost to 3 loss LSU, 5 loss Florida, and Kentucky who went 1-7 in SEC play. If Ole Miss hadn’t given UK its only conference win of the year, then OM would have been in the playoff. South Carolina had a tough schedule but still dropped 3 games (2 at home, including a blowout loss to Ole Miss). Those 2 just had to go 10-2 and they’d have been in without a doubt.

I’m sure Ole Miss and South Carolina fans feel the same.

quote:It will still be the same 8 teams most years. All that’ll change is that now those 8 teams won’t even have to beat any good teams to get into a 20+ team field. The blue blood programs can go 8-4 beating up on teams from G5, FCS, and bottom half of their own conference and still get into a 20+ team playoff. And you’ll have a ton of lopsided games in the early rounds when the bottom seeds are playing the top ranked teams.
For the past decade it’s been a very boring sport with the same 8 teams, A 20 plus team playoff will be incredible for December and January.

I personally think 12 is perfect (actually 8 is imo) but im fine with 16. Anymore than that...no. dumb. FCS used to be 16 then went to 24, IMO it was much better at 16.
