Benefitted the most from the new playoff system than anyone else. Directly won 4 titles due to it.

Right. With the old Winston Cup points format, Gordon has 7 championships instead.

That doesn't take away what Jimmie did. He was still great, and took advantage of the playoff format. I just think some people forget how dominant Gordon was.

Johnson won 10 races in a season once. Gordon did it 3 years in a row, including 13 wins in 1998.

I’m watching this documentary right now. Earnhardt is my GOAT.

Statistically it’s probably Jimmie Johnson.

Richard Petty the GOAT of his era.

Jeff Gordon is my favorite driver of all time.

Either way, those four are my Mount Rushmore. And sorry for the old heads, I was born in ‘92.

Kurt Busch would have won more championships with a better crew chief and owner. He was a very good wheelman and was awesome in the mid 2000’s.

I always thought Matt Kenseth was overrated and Kevin Harvick was underrated.

the stupid chase format really screwed over Jeff Gordon.

Basically had Jeff Gordon's cars and chassis his entire career. He was nothing without Knaus. JG won titles with 2 different crew chiefs.

Jimmie is the easy answer because of he and Knauss' ability to master the playoff. The correct answer is Jeff Gordon. No bullshite changes to the points system and he's your all time leading champion. Consistently great. I was never a fan but being objective you have to give him his due. To me it's between he and Dale. Traditionalists will majorly favor Dale. Gordon was a better natural talent imo.

Another victim of the playoff system. He should've had multiple championships.

That's a pretty strong list.

I agree.

Jeff Gordon- In three season in the late 90s he won 10, 10, and 13 races. That’s incredible especially since the competition was better back then.

If Evernham had stayed with Gordon, there’s no telling how much they would have won. That team was damn near unbeatable in the mid to late 90s.

One that hasn’t been mentioned is Tony Stewart. That dude can drive the absolute shite out of anything. Anything.

Yep.

Would have won 4 titles under the old points system.

Got screwed out of at least 2 titles with the playoff system.

If I had to pick a driver to drive a race for me where my life and my wife's life and my children's lives were riding on the outcome, it would be David Pearson.

I grew up with/went to school with David Pearson’s daughter in Spartanburg, SC. The whole time I never what a legend he was until I was older and out of school.

I only count the Modern Era, due to the more level playing ground

Petty was mostly in the early days where he just flat out had the better car. Not saying he wasn't great. . .but you just can't compare the 2 eras. It is like comparing College baseball today, to the steroids/metal bat era.

He is a top 5 driver, all time

But the best to ever do it, imo, is Jeff Gordon

Jeff Gordon
Darrell Waltrip
Jimmie Johnson
Cale Yarbrough
Richard Petty
Dale Earnhardt

In that order

No Pearson?

Dale is too low and Jimmie is too high.

My list:
Pearson
Earnhardt
Gordon
DW
Petty
