How do you feel about the following scenario. Shooter starts his motion by rising up perpendicular with the ground. Defender, less than an arm lengths away, also rises up perfectly perpendicular with the ground. Shooter's hand makes contact with the defender's hand by process of his follow through. Foul?

I do agree with you though. If I go straight up as a defender, and your fingers hit my hands on the follow through, I feel that the offensive player has actually committed the foul

Now people are arguing that the ball is still touching the hand during a follow through.

No, that shouldn't be a foul at all. But that's not what I'm talking about at this point.

I'm not arguing over basketball's ticky tack fouls

I gotta leave the office anyway and can't figure out how to put into words that's going to make what I'm saying any clearer.

I wish I could post a video or something

so how does the ball get backspin?

Try throwing it at the rim without following through at all and see what kind of rotation you get.

I'll concede that if the ball is completely in the air, like the Steph picture, and you're essentially posing after a shot, then of course getting hit on your shooting hand doesn't affect the shot.

But it's bang bang in the real world and you can get hit on the hand while shooting and the ball still make it to the rim.

We understand what you are saying. And you agree with eveyone besides Lester in that once the ball leaves contact with your hand a surprise hit wont matter. But your definition of follow though is different that 99.9% of the world

I think we are talking about different things

I guess

I'm picturing a bang bang play where a guy gets hit on the hand right as he's shooting. It happens as he's shooting a lot times due to the defensive player contesting the shot, and getting his hand as close to the ball as possible.

It's an entirely different scenario if you're talking about a guy who has landed back on the ground and gets hit on the hand as he's posing with his shooting hand.

We are talking about neither dude, it isnt hard to see what we are talking about. We are talking about a guy getting hit on the hand the milisecond after the ball leaves his hand

Ok, well that's a foul. Albeit a bitch arse foul, but a foul nonetheless. There is an NBA rule that incidental contact is not a foul unless it affects a players rhythm.

Not true. If you lean to the right or left, it will go that way. Like telling a golf ball to stop. It works.
This so works when playing video games. Tell me it doesn't!!!

Not by anything you do after you are no longer touching the ball.
