Following through is part of the shooting motion. The rules clearly state that a player attempting a try for a field goal is in the act of shooting until he lands back on the floor.
Of course one can't alter the ball once it's left your hands but the follow through is part of the shot process. The shooter is protected during the follow through.

Hey Moses, You act like you're revealing the Ten Commandments here but we all understand that.

Wow. Do y'all even watch NBA games? It happens often. Especially on 3point shots. Yes, hitting the arm a split second after the ball been released can affect a shot. I cant believe im arguing this.
Ill provide an analogy that may make a little more sense.
A catcher jumps up out of his stance after a pitch throws the ball and on the follow through, after the ball is released, his mask falls off and hits his arm. This will not affect the accuracy of his throw because he isn't even applying a force to the ball anymore. Yea the next throw might be a little off in the odd chance he fears that his mask will hit him in the arm, but the mask hitting him on that very throw would have no effect.
ETA: I don't like the current rule either

If follow through doesn't matter, then why does literally every NBA/College player do it?

Kicking was an important part of Reggie Miller's shooting motion. Doesn't make it acceptable or good for the game.

I just looked at the pics you posted and you clearly don't know what following through means.
Joe Johnson has already followed through and Doug is still touching the ball. The ball rolls off your fingers when you follow through.
Now if someone hits you in the hand after you've shot, and you've already followed through, sure. That shouldn't be a foul.

Do you know how a ball gets backspin? Follow through. The ball doesn't leave everyone's hand before the follow through. It literally rolls off of your finger tips.
You're acting like this follow through i just some pose to do after you shoot to make yourself look cool.

Feels like people are still arguing that the ball falls faster than the feather.

I agree. You're not seeing what I'm saying here, though.

If the ball is still on his fingers, it's not a follow through.
