They basically canned all that the day after they fired Kelly, though it was never as strict as Kelly wanted you to believe.

it had to do with transfers and if ND would accept their credits.. i think it's been relaxed for athletes in certain majors.

They tightened things up after Holtz left. He could get borderline retards in.

They didn't fire Kelly.

He left a sure 11-1, 10-2 forever job for LSU, because (probably due to the ACC contract and playing what was a good Clemson team) he knew he'd never get the talent needed at Notre Dame to win it all.

They changed their policy due to him leaving like that.

Holtz had some dumbasses on that campus for sure. Wasn’t Tony Rice one of the more infamous cases? Probably cleaned up when Davie took over.

Well, except you really have to attend class and actually pass exams to remain on the team. You're expected to be a solid student.

They don’t have online courses, which is what 90% of major programs’ athletes take.

All horse shite, it's as bad as Stanford claiming they were at a disadvantage because of academics, same with Cal. They had some of the dumbest players in CFB. And they were all academic scholars, no doubt.

And the transfer thing, Missouri had a similar policy, and it killed them in big8, because the other schools would take drooling mongoloids, if they could help their sports. They finally lowered the standards to compete. Nebraska took any retard who could play football, they had a team of prop 48's ready to come in for graduating seniors.

Dude if they had an SEC schedule they’d be 5-4 and still complaining about their “standards.”

Kelly begged ND to change things so that they could compete on a level playing field, they refused he left. Then they hire Freeman and do what they refused to do for BK.Lowered standards and committed more money.

despite making it to the national championship game and ran into a buzzsaw....sounds like a kiffiny decision.

I don't have enough talent to win a title, despite being in a title game, or a couple playoff wins away

It’s almost like Notre Dame wanted Kelly to leave voluntarily and not have to pay a buy-out…. Hmmm….

Umm, not sure what you're trying to argue.

Kelly's Notre Dame team made the national championship game due to name and record. It was undefeated (for what that's worth with their schedule). That was the best team he'd been able to assemble.
Alabama beat them 42-14, in a game they stepped off the gas in the second half.
Same Alabama team won tight games vs UGA in the SEC Championship, and earlier LSU on the road. Had lost to A&M with Manziel in a close game.

Kelly understood- his best team at Notre Dame would not survive in the SEC. There was a talent ceiling. He played a home and home with UGA and lost both, started playing ACC teams and faced Clemson. He beat them once in 3 tries, the covid year. That was a home game, Clemson was missing their QB, and it went to 2 OTs. That was the only "top" team Notre Dame beat while he was there.

No, he wasn't getting enough talent to win a title there

That's right - it was stricter than many big-time college football programs, but it was not that strict.

Weis recruited his arse off and got results on the recruiting trail. Kelly apparently delegated a lot of it to his assistants.

The big change since Freeman came on board (though we started doing this a bit in Kelly's later years) besides $50+M NIL pool is that we now allow undergrad transfers; obviously, with the way the sport was trending, that was an "adapt or die" change.

One thing that is still definitely a component for ND's recruiting philosophy is behavioral stuff - that hasn't changed.

Freeman has been the right guy at the right time for a lot of reasons (in my opinion), but I'll also say that the professionalization of the sport over the last five+ years has benefited ND a ton for all sorts of reasons...one of them being that with 18 - 22 year olds getting paid big money, there is an expectation for them to not act like knuckleheads off the field. That seems to be the case across the sport - a lot less idiotic behavior is tolerated by all big programs than twenty or thirty years ago - but ND has really benefited from that.

If there were ever institutional limits, it was more on the social side - South Bend was a tough place if you wanted to go out and find some fun. That's gotten a lot better than it used to be, but it really doesn't matter that much any more if you're on a seven figure NIL deal.
