Dude must be the greatest tee to green player to ever live considering it surely took him 70+ putts to get around ANGC.

In the overall grand scheme of the argument, I would bet that a 5 handicap golfer could "win the Masters" by starting on the green. But the point of the scenario is that those greens are ridiculously hard for the regular weekend golfer, and I would bet that golfer would average over 3 strokes a hole.

You've argued against this the entire thread.

Of course the greens are hard.

Of course the amateur would struggle under normal circumstances.

But, pretending he can't AVERAGE under a 4 putt starting on the fringe is a far different argument.

Did you see Hatong Li putt one into Rae's Creek on Sunday?

From off the green. That's not the same as starting on the green. Any decent 5 handicap would dominate the masters if they started on the green. It's not even an argument.

This is where you lose me. I’m not saying this cannot be done, but VERY easily?

Yes, and every now and then, this pretend golfer will putt one off the green, and fool around and end up putting up a monster number. Hell, there’s a situation or two where they putt one into the creek I bet.

Why would the 5 handicap get a caddy when he starts om the greens? You guys are all saying it’s a simple 2 or 3 putt. Easy, peasey, Japanesey.

He had a caddy.

He missed every 5 footer on the back 9.

There also the situation where he 2 putts on the par 5 and makes a 2.

Yes. Extremely easily

Think how horrific having 66 putts in a round is. If you did that you would have won this masters by 12 strokes and at the all time record by a shite ton

To control for variables and get as close to what the pros deal with as possible.

No. He doesn’t get a practice round either. He is kidnapped in the middle of the night by Seals and delivered straight to the course on Thursday

...because you want an apples to apples comparison between a pro and an amateur.

I mean, you could blindfold the amateur as well.

A reasonable person would think the amateur would have access to a caddy like the pro and some history and practice on the course similar to the pro. If you have to handicap the amateur in order to make your point, you really don't have one.

I think the whole “starting on the green” is being misconstrued a bit. Every time I’ve had the discussion with folks, it meant to me that the player has hit the green in regulation and is putting for birdie. I wouldn’t bet against a low single digit amateur golfer laying zero on the green doing enough to shoot a winning score. Putting for birdie every hole? A very different story.
