Maybe we should build a shitty 84 win team that goes ice cold at the end of the year and loses 9 in a row in August next year. Apparently they are “built” for the playoffs and we’re not. No way it’s almost all just RISP and strand rate variance in 4-7 game sample sizes. I’m sure it has to do with some kind of toughness or want to.
The Phillies were apparently built for the spotlight against the best offense in modern history but the spotlight of the NLCS against the Dbacks was too much. Maybe they need to trade for Alek Thomas.

I'm more upset that the rousing speech Bauer gave in the clubhouse wasn't enough for the Yokohama Baystars to avoid getting swept in the first round of the NPB Playoffs.
Anyway all this drivel about being postseason soft is nothing more than stupid fan fodder to try and explain the unexplainable. If Acuna's fly ball in the 7th inning travels 5 feet farther in game 4, we're talking about how the 2018 grand slam made him ready for that moment or some stupid shite like that.
If anyone seriously thinks the Diamondbacks and Rangers heading into this season were better prepared for the postseason than us, then you're outing yourself as an emotional vagina. Like I've said for the last few months, the postseason is incredibly random as hell.
Now, with that said, both the Rangers and DBacks did a better job throughout the season in identifying their pitching weakpoints and fixing it (Arizona's bullpen, Texas going after Scherzer and Montomgery). Meanwhile we tried to fix our pitching with reclamation projects.

At least the Phillies won’t win the title. We can console ourselves with that.
It’s maddeningly frustrating, but all you can do is just keep giving yourselves chances to win.

Two things can be true: We choked in the playoffs two years in a row, and the playoffs are random.
We were arguably the "best team" in 2022 and were the best team this year.
For most people its not so much that we lost, but how.

The baseball playoffs now = NHL playoffs. Not sure I’m ok with this considering how damn long the season is.

This is where I am. To me, that didn't look like a team who randomly went cold. That looked like a team who was pressing and feeling the weight of the moment. The massive uptick in strikeouts was a big indicator. They were chasing bad pitches out of the zone way more often than they did in the regular season. It looked like everyone was trying to be the hero who came up with the big hit instead of doing what got them there. They abandoned the approach they had all season. While it does seem true that the playoffs are largely a crapshoot, analytics and probabilities don't account for human nature.
I probably do put too much stock into being hot going into the playoffs, but I don't think it can hurt.

None of us who watch all of the games, day in and day out, could have been surprised by how/when they lost.
Pitching was an issue all season long with the multiple injuries to the starters and bullpen, and what is really frustrating is how they, specifically AA, didn’t fix the issue with going out and getting ‘real’ help. Johnson came in and was solid as Hell, but outside of that the others were so-so or outright bad. AA, I have come to realize, is a bargain bin shopper who hopes/prays something will hit out of a few old DVDs at the reduced price bin in Walmart. He isn’t going to the new releases to find help.
Hitting was really streaky after the All Star break. They went in to that break on fire as a team and came out struggling ever since. They went cold at the worst possible time, and couldn’t recover.
They need someone with some fire, ala Joc Pederson. ‘I’m a bad bitch’ & ‘We may just be those motherfrickers’ type of fire. With all due respect to Sean Murphy and Matt Olson, you see either of those two saying that? I am going to use them as examples, but you could use most anyone on that team. Murphy I never saw do anything but smile. Brian McCann got in someone’s face for pimping a HR. You see Murphy doing that? Hell no. Bryce Harper made throat slashing gestures and no one said shite. He punked out Arica by staring him down rounding the bases, and no one said shite except ‘ he wasn’t supposed to hear that’. Is there anyone on that roster who has a set of balls outside of Nutsack? It takes all types to win, and I believe that, but they need more of THAT type on that team. It is sorely lacking.

we open at Philly next year.
I'd be tempted to have Strider throw at Harper in the first inning, regardless of the circumstances. Set the fricking tone. Even better that we are in their stadium. Show that we don't give a shite about their environment.

You say this and then reference the Pederson/Nutsack effect on the team, but those were bargain bin additions as well.
I do have a feeling, however, that he'll add 2-3 key solutions this offseason. I think specifically that will come in the form of 1 SP and 2 RP additions. My prediction is the LF add will probably be much more lowkey than the fanbase is hoping for.

I've noticed that he's much more aggressive in the offseason than he is at the deadline. He's not the type to overpay in a seller's market.
I think Grissom gets traded this winter. At the deadline, Grissom may get you a controllable reliever or a rental starter. In the offseason, he could be part of a package that lands a top of the rotation type of arm with controllable years left.

Could not possibly agree more with this.

The NHL playoffs are the best playoffs in pro sports and it's not particularly close.

Once in awhile they hit, but most do not. Soler/Pederson/Rosairo (that season) all hit. There is nothing wrong with being a bargain bin shopper, as long as you get a new release every now and then. He just doesn't shop in that section, which is the rub for me.

You guys are right.
We'll keep having the best team in baseball and getting beat in the NLDS.
Say what you want about the Phillies not making the WS but they went the distance and doubled the average runs per game that the Braves did in the NLDS.
Also, when we complain about the pitching staff, it's easy to point fingers at the offense. But maybe they were pressing so much because of the fear that our pitching couldn't hold their offense. Puts a lot more pressure on them.

Yeah, the rolling over and letting Philly pet our belly attitude was what pissed me off. Losing is frustrating enough, but when you get punked and don't show any fight it makes it 1000x worse.

I hope not, but Joc Pederson being on this team doesn't win that series.
I do think AA has left at least one World Series on the table by going after Jake Odorizzi and Yonny Chirinos as his big pitching deadline acquisitions the last two years.
At some point he's going to have make win-now moves at the deadline.

You couldn't be more wrong. The only issue I have with the NHL playoffs are too many teams, but with NO break after the season and a 4 of 7 series in every round makes it very exciting. This set up is perfect after an 82 game season.
