Are we burying the Florida Bowls and the Alamo Bowl yet?

I feel like these were the games that routinely had some fun top 15 matchups. I understand these pros are above playing in a meaningless game these days anyway, but there’s no way the Gator and Citrus, etc survive with 7-5 and 6-6 teams.

There’s a fair chance the SEC has played its final game Orlando, and maybe Tampa.

Maybe I'm edgy but next year's starters will always want reps & coach will always want a tougher test than the spring game. I think Bowls are going through a role change, but they'll still stay important

In theory, you are correct. I think MAC teams and your second tier Sun Belt teams or whatever will want to play. Those guys likely aren’t making shite in NIL, it’s a free trip. It’s the last game ever for most of those guys, and the last chance for some to put some tape out there for the draft. That said, the idea of a Citrus Bowl featuring Ball State and Coastal Carolina isn’t gonna move the needle.

The Gator Bowl has been putting teams at 6-6 in for a few years now

Bowls are funded by TV rights, corporate sponsorships, and tickets

Bowls do not get more money from ESPN by nature of being historically relevant. If the matchups are Bahamas Bowl teams, they are getting Bahamas Bowl money and staring down Bahamas Bowl outcomes

There is no “free trip” when there are no games. Every non-CFP game is at existential risk

They’ve been dead for a decade.

Look at the bright side. In a few years when the bowl games are gone, at least we can all spend the week between Christmas and New Years watching more of Pat Mcafee and Stephen A Smith.

The week between Christmas and New Years used to be peak. Non-stop football while everyone’s off work.

That’s gonna be a thing of the past now. Will be a dead week now. Nothing but Pat McAfee replays.

Put them at the beginning of the season. Games more likely to sell out and make it count as a regular season game and players won’t opt out.

They are about 14 months away from being playoff games.

With the extended playoffs, a number of these bowls will get a second life as a sweet-16 playoff game.

Doubt it. I bet the NY6 bowls that already host CFP games will push back against that because it will likely hurt ticket sales for their games if you add an extra round of neutral site games for fans to travel too. 3 rounds of neutral site games already stretches the budget and PTO days for a lot of hardcore fans who want to attend. Adding an extra round just makes it worse, especially when a 24 team playoff means for a lot of teams, they’re in the playoff every year. Travel fatigue is going to be an issue.

Maybe if they go to 32.

At 24, the top 16 all get a home playoff game (9-16 first round, 1-8 second round). To make the sweet 16 neutral sites, you'd be taking away home games from seeds 1-8.

Other bowls will probably just exist like the NIT for basketball. Sure after the playoff it's gonna be mostly 7-5 and 6-6 P4 teams and some G6 teams but again that's essentially what the NIT is too. They can just take place during the week in between playoff rounds.
