Are Mock Drafts and their coverage the dumbest part of the sports calendar?

No one knows anything and it's purely speculation. I've never understood the ongoing fascination with mock drafts. I understand discussing teams needs and where they are picking and who may be available. But iteration after iteration of mock drafts 1.0, 2.0, 3.1, 4.7. just get over it already...

it's nothing more then a player ranking
leave the nfl teams off and address what their main needs are
the most useful thing is player position rankings then you can get a feel for what players at each position are likely to get drafted first
change one pick in the top ten of most mocks and that throws the whole draft out of whack

There was some loser on espn that did a hypothetical mock draft where every pick involved a trade. Now that is a whole new level of pointlessness.
I don’t really have a problem with typical mock drafts except they are way overdone and should only be done by people with specialized knowledge not every Joe Schmo sportswriter.

Probably not the worst thing, just overdone.

What's worse are posters making mock drafts and letting everyone know what they did in their little fantasy hour at home on the couch

I have fun doing them but the reality is what I can come up with is no worse than what anyone who calls himself an expert at this can do.

Sports cliches.
Add topics like:
- Mount Rushmore
- Who has the most pressure
- LeBron vs. Jordan
ugh. lowest common denominator.

Most of the people doing the mocks are clueless. I've seen mock drafts for GB picking an OT in round 1 because Bakhtiaria is now gone, but he only played in 3 games last year.

Yes, and I can’t get enough of them. I’m 100% the problem but I don’t care. Also, my favorite article of the year is ALWAYS next years mock 1st round 24 hours after the NFL draft ends. Again, I’m an idiot and I’m the problem but I just can’t help it.

Yes. It's stupid they spend so much time discussing it and none of it matters at all. We will find out where players go when they are drafted, why do we need to speculate on it beforehand?
It's never made sense to me. I guess it does ratings tho so it will continue

Only thing that seems more pointless is when ESPN devotes an hour of programming to mock fantasy drafts

I used to love it. I loved doing mocks and reading about players and all that.
Then as they expanded it to multiple days and I realized how absolutely fricking stupid it was.
At least 70% of these guys will be absolute bums, if not more. Every prospect gets glowing coverage in the first round, but then these guys suck.

Maybe, but they all do it because it generates tons of clicks and ratings.

A close second is the arbitrary comparisons to past and present NFL players.

The cottage industry isn't interesting to me. I do find it entertaining when they talk about how good workouts are. I seem to remember there were reports about how Jamarcus Russell had the greatest workout anyone had ever seen. The reporting is always myopic outsizing one anecdote over a complete body of work.
ETA: I also love the reporting "I'm hearing from someone who has no incentive to give me correct information and every incentive to give me misleading information that such and such team likes such and such player."

It’s the “insider” reporter’s Super Bowl. They’re just competing with each other on who has the best info.
It’s all meaningless until after the picks get called, but it’s entertaining. They had people thinking Daniels wasn’t going #2 just a couple days ago

Possibly, but I would go with "Does Player X deserve to be in the Hall of Fame".

Outside of the top 4-5 picks it is a total crapshoot on what will actually happen but this is a very slow part of the sports calendar if you're not a soccer or NBA fan. After it is all said and done, no one gives a shite about your mock draft.

To me, it is crazy that the NFL Draft happens nearly 4 months after the college football season ends and 2 1/2 months after the Super Bowl. Too much time leads to too much silliness - "Caleb Williams has short toes. Can't have that." "Marvin Harrison Jr. got a ticketed for going 80 on the interstate. Character issues?" If I were NFL commissioner, it would be in late March/early April.
