I'm a heathen , but I usually root for BYU if I'm watching one of their games.

They were when Catholics felt repressed and looked down upon (mostly Irish Catholics).....so ND fans weren't roooting for the school or the State ( 90% of fans lived outside of Indiana)....that's why they were called America's Team as the only Nationwide team.... But that was a long-time ago.
Now there's obviously quite a few teams that have a National following.

One of my coworkers is a big Notre Dame guy and a Catholic. He explained that major college football has only two Catholic schools, Notre Dame and Boston College. Boston College is/was rarely on the tube, so Notre Dame it is.
He also said Notre Dame doesn't hide or evade its Catholicism and it promotes it. Apparently, Georgetown did something for one of former President Obama's speeches at the campus that really pissed off hard core Catholics.

I'm non denominational and really like BYU but hate Notre Dame.

I know a Mormon baw and he’s a Utah fan but he went to Utah. I’ve gathered the more hardcore Mormons are BYU and the less serious ones are Utah.

Yes from my experience. Boise State and the other rural schools also have a lot of Mormon support but most of the Mormon guys that I worked either went to BYU or their kids attended.
