They were a double-A baseball team in Jackson, MS. A Houston Astros affiliate from 1991 to 1999. This is where I became a huge baseball fan. There is not much material on the internet. I was curious if anyone else remembers them.

Yep, went to a game or two off Lakeland Dr. back in the day. I remember them being pretty good when I was growing up.

I believe Lance Berkman came through at one point.

My dream is to tear down smith wills and build a modern stadium. If I had a billion dollars I’d buy a minor league team.

Smith-Wills Stadium by the Dizzy Dean Museum

I saw Jeff Juden pitch there when he was supposed to be the ‘big new thing’ for the Stros in the early 90’s

The Shreveport Captains owned the Jackson Mets/Generals. My dad worked in the front office for the Captains. I got to see all the future stars who came through the Texas League. One of the biggest stars that played for the Mets was Darryl Strawberry. That was back in old spar stadium. Before the gem that was Fair Grounds Field. Which is currently in the middle of a demolition that has been in limbo for years now.

I really miss those times at Fairgrounds Field. We were there for the opening game all the way through the Swamp Dragons and the bastard 'Captains'.

One of my favorite shirts growing up was from the Tulsa Drillers.

Does Jackson get another minor league team after the Braves move to Columbus? I think Trustmark park is nice and has hotels and restaurants/shopping around the stadium.

Should be more than enough to get another team.

Affiliated baseball might be tough. The only AA team with worse attendance was Biloxi. If a Braves affiliate in solid Braves country fizzles out, it probably won’t be looked at as a priority for a while. Maybe in a decade when people miss it again

I collect useless shite, among them old minor league jerseys, and have a Jackson Generals gamer in my closet.

Cook Maloney owned the Jackson Mets/ Generals. I don’t know that there was ever ownership by the Captains.

Richard Hildago, Lance Berkman, Bobby Abreu, Daryle Ward played for the Generals. Many a ball disappeared into the pines from those bats.

A lot of the 86 Mets came up through Jackson. Gooden didn’t but Strawberry, Dykstra and McDowell all played in Jackson. That’s also where Davey Johnson got his start managing

Ha, I remember the old Jackson Mets playing in Smith-Wills stadium, and went to many games when I lived there c 83-84. A lot of guys on those teams that went to the bigs like McDowell, Mitchell, Shiraldi and Dyskstra…but I always remember guys who were there like Lashell Tarver, Herb Winningham, Ed Hearn and Al Pedrique. Billy Beane of Moneyball fame was also there. Also saw an exhibition game in 84 vs the US Olympic team with McGuire and Will Clark….still have a baseball with red and blue seams.

Was in town years later and did catch one Generals game. Lance Berkman was playing.

May have been an autocorrect that
got you, but his name was Con Maloney.

Aka “Cowboy”.

Edit to correct my mistake -“cowboy” was apparently his father’s nickname as well as the name of the business they owned “Cowboy Maloney’s”

I wonder why their attendance is so low? Seems to be a fun park located next to all those casinos.
