the lull we had between it breaking from TMZ (most people didn't want to believe it) then finally being confirmed by more legit outlets.
How many stories do they have to break? TMZ is the most legit source. Essssssssssspecially if it happens in Southern California

No it isnt, at least not how I took his post

I took his post as not talking about a persons popularity, but talking about each individuals humanitarian efforts
I don't think it makes any sense at all to take his post that way. I'd bet whatever post he's referring to is talking about the death and not the humanitarian efforts.

Are you stating if that person died while still young, you'd think about it and deal with it exactly the same as if you read som article about a Mom who died in a car accident in Boise, Idaho?

Absolutely yes

But the thing is I am alot less likely to hear about the boise idaho death

But if I actually read the article where it talks about the family etc etc, I would have the same level of shite bucket in my stomach

I think its the only way to take his post

I am not saying I agree, but I think his post is saying kobe is simply a very famous person, while diana was a famous humanitarian, so comparing the two deaths is dumb

because the more information you have about a person, the more if affects you

which is exactly why people are more upset about Kobe than people they have never heard of

because they have followed him for possibly 2 decades

Yeah honestly I thought this was very “Princess Di” type death.

Both died via transportation. Both died relatively young. Both had noted “drama” in their personal lives that the media ate up.

There are lots of similarities. I don’t think a lot of people realize how global Kobe’s name and brand is. This dude was right there with MJ, Lebron, Ronaldo, Usain Bolt, etc.

If you had a favorite athlete or just some athlete you really liked, and you're a huge sports fan and this dude was a big part of your sports fandom for over half of your life, and you've dedicated countsless hours(probably actual days/weeks of your life) watching this dude, reading about this dude, talking about this dude on a message board. And that dude dies tragically, it's only logical that this will stick with you more based on all the time you have dedicated to this person than the 5 minute article you read.

Or more to the point, I'd say it's extremely odd that you can't grasp why the above would be so.

Honestly, Kobe’s death is the only celebrity death that I’ve shed tears for due to his age, the sheer fluky nature of how he died, how he was one of the first athletes who I remember watching and admiring for virtually their entire career and of course the fact that his daughter perished in the accident with him. Kobe will never watch his daughters graduate high school and college. He’ll never get the opportunity to walk them the aisle or see his grandchildren. It’s just tragic.

If you're comparing them as humanitarians, yes it's dumb.

But to say Kobe's death, specifically to the sports world, is on the level of Diana's death to the entire world, that IMO is a really good way to sum it up.

This is by far the most shocking and impactful sports death of all time.

I was generally anti-Kobe during his career but agree with some of what you said. I think he had become a solid husband/father in recent years and had much more to offer.

I also recall many years ago that it was suggested Kobe had a difficult time relating to the black youth culture when he moved to Philly as a teenager. I think this may have affected his personality in those early Laker years but it's clearly evident that he eventually developed many close relationships and became a mentor to many of today's NBA stars.

I am.

It's not that I'm noticeably upset, but I am a little surprised how it's put a bit of a damper on the last 24 hours. The kid thing is definitely what gets to me the most.

Do I fid Kobes death more strange feeling? Of course. He was someone I expected to see on tv the rest of my life

But when I read about the random ochsner mom being murdered, the quick article mentioned how she was a single mother working for her 2(maybe 3 kids)

My sadness/feeling like shitness I got reading that article, and hearing of kobes death is honestly the same. I felt bad and wanted to hug my kids because hearing of a loving parent dying simply sucks.

He seemed to be growing into a better person, and I really admired how active he was in his daughter's life. They seemed to be best friends. If I had a child that's the type of relationship I'd want with them.

Well said.

I couldn't stand young Kobe for the simple fact that the Lakers dominated every single season when I first started paying attention to basketball. As I grew older and studied the game more, I fell in love with his game and the preparation it took for him to play at his level and he quickly became my favorite athlete.

He was the ultimate competitor and I have watched countless interviews of him expounding on his curiorisity in so many other ventures outside of the game of basketball. You had a guy that had mastered his craft but was so thirsty for knowledge and he poured his own knowledge back out into his peers, his daughter, and countless people in this world.

As an average guy with limited athletic ability, I went from trying to emulate his footwork playing pick up ball when I was in college to emulating his work ethic, drive, and curiosity in my work life.

This is the first celebrity death that has shaken me and probably the only one that ever will. I was looking forward to following his post-retirement ventures and his role as a father and mentor to so many. The world lost someone who had such a positive impact on what seems like infinite lives.

OK, the guy was a great entertainer, but did you know him personally? Most on these shows didn't..yet they're acting as if their own family member died. It's really and truly bizarre and strange. Guys die every day in the military and on police forces and no one shows 1/100th of the remorse. Call me cynical, but I belive much of this is for show...hosts trying to outdo each other with "emotion" and "seriousness"

I'm not sure why people are acting shocked people are mourning an incredibly popular figure who's life was cut short in tragic fashion. How is "it's not like he was a family member" some sort of point? Grieving the loss of a family member and grieving the loss of Kobe are not mutually exclusive.

As for the comments about other people who die every day, again, it's like you have no common sense. If Obama or Trump died tomorrow, would you have a hard time understanding why people would grieve? People invest a ton of time and emotion into people they'll never meet. It's not the least bit surprising those people will grieve when that person is gone.

Everyone went back and forth arguing about where this stacks up yesterday on a few boards. My take is this - for most American millennials, Kobe is the biggest/most shocking death I can recall. Michael Jackson, Princess Diana, etc were bigger globally, but for our generation, I think Kobe is a bigger deal.

any tragic stories that involve kids make me feel sick

but I think you are answering your own question of not understanding

more information equals more emotion
