Yeah, I think that the Maryland fans started to hate Duke big time after J-Will's legendary comeback. Besides, both schools had great teams around then so the games were very competitive from 1999 to 2002 or so. Afterwards, Maryland started to dip so the fans just focused on Duke's white players. It was kind of strange to see them focus on Singler last year because he is perhaps the most quiet, non-confrontational, and boring white starter at Duke for a while.
I agree with you about Gary at Maryland, but even if he can't recruit much, he's a very solid bench coach. NC State is being run into the ground by one of the worst bench coaches in D-1.

Hatred of Duke started in the mid-90s as Maryland recovered from probation. Duke was the top dog, UNC was down, and they were the top two teams. I'd say from about 95-05, it was a hot rivalry. Not so much right now as the Terps have collapsed.

Probably because they both win a lot, and some ESPN analysts give them the Tebow treatment from November to March.

i think so especially the year ku won the title people were on unc's nuts and i knew kansas was better. after the semi final games, they asked the espn crew who they picked to win the title (kansas vs. memphis). dickie v was spouting off some bullshite about how he still picked unc to win and i just wanted to kill him.

For some reason, people only like to point of Dickie V's homerism for Duke. That guy is as big a homer for UNC and Wake. He just loves the ACC and uses emotional arguments instead of facts.

I'm a Duke fan. I'm also a huge Lakers and Yanks fan. I'll also pull for the Cavs...and Gators when they're not playing UT.

You were calling out the Duke fans on this thread for being bandwagon fans. Unless you are from North Carolina or went to the school, how are you in any way different? What made you start liking UNC?
I'm not taking any personal offense to this. Baloo and I have gone to ACC schools but most people on this site enjoy ACC basketball because it is the best league. I'm not going to call out anyone for gloryhunting or bandwagoning unless they are being hypocritical because it is present among lots of fans. I didn't see that in this thread at all, at least from the Duke fans.

UNC basketball has fans nationwide that have no connection to UNC (as does Duke, UK, etc). The only so called LSU fan I can recall meeting that had no connection to LSU at all told me he was an LSU fan in FB, but UNC in basketball

I had 2 uncles graduate there, and have family from there. But they aren't the reason I am a UNC fan. I grew up and loved Michael Jordan. Found out he went to UNC, became a fan at the early age of 6 or 7. Been a fan since and faithful since then. It has been almost 20 years now. So if that is bandwagon then you people are more ignorant then I thought.

I do not define bandwagon fans by length of time supporting the team. I'm sure it was difficult supporting UNC for that 1 year they didn't make the NCAA's or those couple of years they didn't make the sweet 16.
Sorry but rooting for a college team in one sport, where they just so happen to be one of the great programs of all-time, because as a kid you liked the greatest NBA player of all time and found out he went there is pretty much a bandwagon fan as far as I'm concerned no matter how long ago that was.

A fan is a fan, no matter what. If you flip flop every few years, then that is bandwagon. I have stuck with UNC for a long time. Even when Matt Dougherty tried to kill the tradition earlier in the decade. He killed UNC for a couple years and had great talent, he just sucked as a coach. But I guarantee you almost every "Duke" fan in the last decade came because they were beating UNC earlier this decade. So, take it FWIW but your opinion is irrelevant to me.
