Duke basketball is somewhat similar to Notre Dame Football in that they have fans that like them in their respective sports and thats it. They arent connected to the universities and dont follow their other athletic programs.
yes, these aka bandwagon fans or douchebags

Do you agree with this part as well?

They stick to basketball, so it's not all that different from Notre Dame football fans, UNC basketball fans, Syracuse basketball fans, Kentucky basketball fans, etc. But for some reason, Duke and ND get singled out for this. Alabama has tons of football only fans, Kentucky has tons of basketball only fans, etc. Even the actual student bodies reflect this to a lesser extent.

Duke and ND have much larger national followings than any other schools. You rarely run into an Alabama FB or UK basketball fan that have no ties what so ever to those schools or states.

basketball is not as popular as football. football games are events. When I was at LSU, the basketball team was good every year, but the end of my time, the FB sucked arse, yet FB games still drew 70,000. The students will still support the school's teams in every sport.

I never paid particular attention to the student section at Tiger Stadium as a kid, but students don't make up the vast majority of the fans at any football or basketball game in America. Even at Cameron, there are about 9000 seats total, about 1400 go to undergrads, 600 to grad students, and the other 7000 to people who have renewed tickets for decades.
I lived in Baton Rouge as a kid. Coincidentally, this was at the peak of the Hallman and Dinardo years. Everyone was rocking starter jackets and Nike hats of Florida, FSU, Miami, UNC, Duke, and Michigan (for some reason).
If you go up North, the schools shift geograhpically, but the same thing occurs. The constants everywhere seem to be Michigan, UNC, Duke, and Notre Dame.

true, but not really relevant. FB is still more widely followed at most places. IIRC when I was at LSU the student section at TS was 8-10 times as large as the student section at BB. Hell the student section in TS was larger than the PMAC. For the most part students are fans of all the schools teams, even if they don't follow the sports as closely. I don't really follow women's basketball, but if I do, I root for LSU, I don't just root for UConn.

I assume you mean other kids? Kids are different. Kids can root for different teams. I talking about adults. If you went to LSU, but root for UNC in basketball, you are a douche.
But the other thing you are talking about is fashion. In the 90's Starter jackets were cool, Nike hats were cool. Not everybody that wore those were "fans" of the teams. Especially kids. Also during that time, a lot of sports attire was popular with gangs and rappers. This trend of course spread. blue teams (Michigan, UNC) were popular with crips. Remember Dr Dre were White Sox hats?

I'm actually a pretty big fan of college basketball. I love Duke, but I also like Cuse, Zags, Butler, ect. I have no connection with any school but LSU.

I was referring to both middle/high schoolers and college kids. I was on campus quite a bit, and I definitely noticed a shift towards more LSU gear in the late '90s. You are definitely right about the fashion statements though, and I guess kids may have been copying the West Coast rappers who wearing Michigan jerseys for reasons they probably didn't understand.
But even now, if you go anywhere in the South or the North, you will see people of all ages wearing Duke, UNC, and Notre Dame gear. Well, I suppose there are some exceptions. I didn't see much UNC gear in college

If I was a big recruit and didn't care about school, I would commit to Cuse on the spot.

And I'll use this as another chance to show how photoshopped the whole thing is.
Well no shite, but it's still funny because Duke sucks.

When i say kids, i mean HS and JHS, basically under 20.
Duke and ND have do large national following. In the case of ND many Catholics root for them.
State schoools like UNC, Michigan have large alumni bases. You also have hade a lot of people that have moved from the midwest to the south in the last 30 years. There is a good chance that when you see someone with a Michigan or Ohio State hat on in the south , he may actually be an alum or at least from the state, especially in larger cities

Here's his diary if anyone is interested.

To be fair though, he has said nothing but positive things about each school he has visited so far. However, at Kansas, it was mostly about how nice Bill Self's house is, while at Duke and UNC, there are more substantive comments.
