When the University of Hawaii football team walked off the Aloha Stadium turf following a 38-21 win over UNLV last Saturday, little did the Rainbow Warriors know that they could be saying goodbye to their home for good.
Sources tell KHON2 that Aloha Stadium has been deemed unsafe to hold crowds of any manner and is expected to be condemned. The stadium, which was built in 1975, has been home to the UH football team and HHSAA championship games for the past 45 years.
Numerous schools across Oahu choose to hold their graduation ceremonies at Aloha Stadium.
Since opening, the stadium has dealt with numerous issues, including rust.
Thursday’s news leaves UH in a major bind. No other stadium on Oahu is close to the 15,000-seat quota. Clarence T.C. Ching Stadium on the UH-Manoa campus currently holds under 5,000 fans.
The new Aloha Stadium, which is expected to hold anywhere from 30,000 to 35,000, is not expected to be ready until 2023 at the earliest.

2020 still out here killing things off.
I assume this means the Hawaii Bowl and Hula Bowl are both gone until 2023 if they ever come back at all.

That place looked like it was on the verge of structural failure for years.

Always hated watching games there. Ugly stadium, terrible crowds.

I've seen a few games there where there was just trash blowing across the field.

My parents went there back in the 90s and they said it was a dump then. I can't imagine what 30 more years has done to it

I guess it’s time to say aloha to aloha stadium.

I saw Pearl Jam open for U2 there back in the 2000s, and it was totally packed. Glad i didn't know about its condition back then.

Getting smashed while watching the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve night. A tradition unlike any other.

You could just tell on TV that thing was ancient and not kept up at all.
I'm surprised it's just 50 years old. Was probably a cheap POS when they built it to begin with.

True story:
The Hawaii coach when the stadium opened, Larry Price, was attending an annual coaches convention. He wanted to schedule a team for an easy win to open Aloha. He scheduled NAIA’s Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville). Price happened to be in an elevator with Darrell Royal and mentioned this ‘little school in Texas’ he had coming out to the island to open the stadium. Upon hearing it was Texas A&I, Royal told Price he made a mistake.
The Texas A&I Javelinas went out to Hawaii and pounded the Warriors 43-9. The agreement was for 2 years, and the following year A&I dominated again 56-21. They finished ‘76 undefeated with a 3rd consecutive championship under Coach Gil Steinke. Steinke later coached the USFL’s San Antonio Gunslingers. Quarterback Richard Ritchie led the Javelinas, compiling a 39-0 record as starter.
The A&I/A&M-Kingsville program produced some legendary players:
John Randle
Darrell Green
Gene Upshaw
Randy Johnson (the first QB the Falcons ever drafted)
Johnny Bailey
The Javelinas have fallen on some hard times these days.

Colt Brennan. Who was the QB when they got waxed by UGA in Sugar Bowl?

Colt Brennan. He got hit every. single. play.
That's the second worst beating I've ever seen a team take. The 2008 Egg Bowl when Ole Miss beat State 45-0 was worse.
I never will forget people saying that Hawaii's offense was "too fast" for Georgia to keep up with.

I remember June Jones talking about how his office had the same nasty carpet since the 70’s. The place is a dump.

Early on, I thought the UGA defensive end was going to end up with 20 sacks in that game. They weren't even slowing him down.

Marcus Howard.
I legit though he killed Colt Brennan on the sack fumble that UGA recovered for a TD in the 2nd half. I heard from a friend who was sitting behind the Hawaii players that Brennan was crying on the bench during the game.
