weather is a huge difference in playoffs vs regular season.

When it gets cold, it takes the air out of the ball. There were a few flyouts in St.Louis, when Waino pitched that would of went out, if it was in 80's or even 90's and humid. Braves won that game anyway.

braves bent the knee and paid for it.

Conspiracy theory

The conspiracy theory I was referring to was you thinking the Cardinals made some deal with "the devil" MLB to change the ball just before the playoffs to negatively impact the Braves power hitters and positively impact the Cardinals. I can see the fricking data but keep melting.

I believe it. I also believe that this was brought up before the playoffs ever began.

Everyone knows that indoor stadiums are air tight.

Try to keep up...

If its played in a vacuum, Astros win easily.

I'm not exactly looking at the weather and wind patterns, but I can see Yankee Stadium, St. Louis, whoever's air being heavier this time of year as temps drop from the summer.

But Houston in a retractable roof? Why would the air make that big a difference there?

I see where you're going, and I don't disagree. But the Rays aren't the Devil Rays anymore. They're more like sun rays now. So they're both used to being a vacuum, the astros would just need special suits.

Atlanta hit 39 more HRs than the Cards this year, or 1 extra HR every 4.15 games.

They played 5 games, and ATL hit 1 more HR than the Cards.

So basically, it was about as close to the exact same advantage they had in the regular season as could be based on a 5 game series.

A juiced/non juiced ball wouldn't change the ratio, it would change the totals. I don't understand what point you're trying to make here. Without digging deeper into the numbers and showing total runs scored by these HRs, it's an incomplete comparison. A team can hit fewer HRs, but have those be more impactful by having guys on base.

quote:

If there's actual data to show the Braves came within a couple of feet of a HR a bunch more times than the Cards in the series, that would be valid, but it is not posted.

I don't think this part is entirely relevant. If the braves hit 1 more HR per 4-5 games, they'd only need 1 more of these non HRs. I go back to my previous statement here, to analyze these and what impact they would've had, you'd not only need how many occurrences there were, but also how many guys were on base. If the cards had 0 on and a guy hit a warning track shot, it's not the same as one like ours in the 7th of game 4 that would've been a grand slam. Radio and TV announcers all thought it was out too.

In short, we'd need a lot more data that what you posted to determine if there was an advantage lost.

wouldn't better pitching have something to do with this?

In the playoffs, managers use pitchers much differently... putting ace starters in as relievers, ensuring each plate appearance is a matchup in their favor, etc.

It seems to me, this would have an effect on the number of home runs.

These metrics are on hit balls. Based on exit velocity + launch angle + ballpark variable.

Has nothin to do with better pitching.
