In hindsight we may look back one day and say the Golden State run is the thing that crushed the sport. It was Golden St and new age analytics that ushered in this style of play. Not just in the NBA, but all of basketball. At their core, the analytics have merit. Simply put 3 is more than 2. So why take only a slightly less difficult shot (mid-range jumper) when a shot from just a bit further back is worth 50% more? There becomes less emphasis on FG% because a higher volume of 3, even at a lower % of makes, can be more valuable than a higher % of made 2's (or at least equal).
However, Golden St had something the rest of basketball doesn't...maybe the best outside shooter in the history of the game. It was a "small market" team who had to figure out another way to compete when the league was in the midst of superstars forming super teams. The did, with incredible success. As we know, success ALWAYS lends itself to others trying to copy it. Now you have 6'11 guys who couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat spending years chucking up bricks until they finally become proficient at the 3 point shot (if ever).
Another factor is AAU basketball has essentially replaced HS basketball. That is horrible for development of young players because the play in AAU basketball is basically the equivalent of an NBA All-Star game. These guys then enter college (if that) with very little understanding of the basics of team basketball and how to play the game. Thus, it's taking them longer to learn how to play...something that was previously taught in HS. Just chucking up 3's or attacking the rim doesn't take a lot of understanding of the game to execute. That means teams are taking that approach in order to hopefully find success immediately rather than wanting to spend the time to truly develop the raw talent. It's also why you are seeing Euro players have so much success in the NBA. On the whole they aren't quite as athletic as the American players. Yet, they understand and can execute the game at a higher level because they have been properly coached and developed.

It's funny to read people say, "If my local team was easily accessible I'd watch" when all I've read for the last decade is Association fans mock baseball for being a regional sport televised on Bally (or whatever iteration it was at the moment). The NBA is learning that when you shortchange your sport and teams at the expense of selling "stars*", you damned sure better hope your stars are always appealing. There are no transcendent stars in the NBA galaxy that make people either forego local allegiances or get them to set aside their activities to watch. Mix in some cookie cutter analytic strategy and your curb appeal diminishes.
*Never understood why David Stern is always lauded as this great commissioner. He planted the seeds of the Association's present day troubles.

I first read the title as Adam Sandler admits NBA rating are down.

He did plant those seeds, but he did so with marketable stars that skyrocketed the NBA’s popularity. The problem is the same strategy may not work in 2024.

Something tells me a bunch of NBA all stars will pull out of the new format and take the vacation instead
Posted on 12/18/24 at 3:52 pm to RLDSC FAN
Haven’t seen a single NBA game in probably 5 years so group me in the fold.
Bad product, get lectured and the players are ridiculously overpaid. Meanwhile, the in game experience is too much when you factor in tix, parking and concessions

What? Lol it's regular season games besides the one final game. Some of you guys really chime in even when it's clear you don't understand stuff.

Its a revenue split. You think the owners should make more and the players salaries should stay the same?

TV ratings are down for every sport,
That's not true
Baseball aside from the most watched World Series in 7 years, the regular season and playoffs had nice increases
quote:
ESPN generated its most-watched season of Sunday Night Baseball Presented by Capital One in five years – since 2019 – according to Nielsen. The 2024 campaign averaged 1,505,000 viewers across 25 games, up six percent from 2023.
quote:
The nine-game wild card round involving eight teams, aired across the Disney owned ABC, ESPN and ESPN2. Collectively, this year’s wild card games averaged 2.82 million viewers, a +25% increase from the 2023 games and was the most watched wild card games to date.
NFL is up
quote:
The NFL has recorded its highest television ratings in nine years, averaging 18.6 million viewers across its first three weeks of the 2024 season. This number is a significant rise compared to the previous season’s average of 17.9 million, which was itself the highest since 2015.
quote:
Game broadcasts are averaging 17.3 million viewers, NFL Media’s X account posted, which is the highest figure through Week 10 since 2015
College Football is up, playoffs will also deliver
quote:
ESPN platforms delivered record-breaking college football viewership in 2024, with ABC owning the season as the No. 1 network for college football, averaging 5.8 million viewers for 46 regular season games, an impressive 56 percent increase year-over-year and ABC's best college football season in 15 years
Both Men's and Women's March Madness were up
quote:
The first round of the men’s March Madness tournament averaged 8.3 million viewers, making it the most-watched first round ever under the traditional format, per Turner Sports. The Sweet Sixteen averaged 10.31 million viewers per game, a 5 percent increase from last season.
WNBA ratings were up 155% last season
Olympics were up 82% from the Tokyo Games
NHL ratings are down 29% this season

That article treated Silver nicer than most after his PC. Most included this stupid thing he said in response to the ratings:
“If you look at other data points, in terms of our business, for example, we’ve just come off the last two years of the highest attendance in the history of this league,” Silver said. “We’re at a point where our social media audience is at the highest of any league and continuing to grow exponentially. So, it’s not a lack of interest in this game.”
Hoops rumors
The NBA is winning Tick Tock!

i'll continue to say it...
the team with the best regular season record in the west and east meet in the finals. just skip the playoffs which are way too long and tedious.
that immediately raises the stakes of the regular season and introduces jeopardy. watch the load management magically disappear

Gutting college basketball is a huge factor that no one talks about. Fans used to have interest in their players going to the league after their junior or senior year of college. Then came the straight from high school era and the one and done era. I could give two fvcks about what any of the Calipari guys are doing in the NBA.

There is just no compelling reason to watch the nba right now unless you are a hardcore fan.
Literally the only reason I watch it is because I gamble on it; otherwise, I probably would not care at all. It's truly not a great product, but I've found a groove betting props.

I haven't watched more than 3 of their games this year. I don't have access to their games as I did in the past with Ballys and now that they are terrible I'm not going to seek out how to find them.
How do you not have GCSN 7-1… that’s specifically why they made that move
Now yeah, they’re on free tv, I guess you get what you pay for

Well then you need to be removed if that's your honest assessment..... Because the game sucks and fans are telling you boldly that the League is trash and uncompelling, uncompetitive, uninteresting.

the thing you aren't realizing is that money is still the most important part, and all those playoff and even the extra regular seasons games helped create that record TV deal they just signed that is gonna double (almost triple) salaries across the league. (as well as double how much goes in the owners pockets)
they want higher ratings but not at the cost of less money and less games. (total viewers)
the reason those companies pay so much for tuesday and wednesday night regular season games is because they need live sports to air in those slots, because despite people watching less live sports, it's still more than watch live television.

I have to believe some of the lower viewership is caused by streaming. Not everyone will purchase multiple apps to watch the games. Also how many people watch games on cracked streaming websites that aren’t counted in the ratings?

thanks for proving that Silver is the worst commissioner in all of american sports for sacrificing the health & popularity of the game for cash. its all gonna backfire if the downward trend in fan interest continues (and there's no reason to believe that it wont')
