In a move to provide more transparency with regard to the transfer portal, the NCAA released statistics and information for the years 2020 and 2021 that shows only 54% of FBS players who entered the portal enrolled at a new school.
During the two-year period shown in the infographics provided by the NCAA, 5% of student-athletes who entered the portal withdrew their name, while 41% remained active in the transfer portal. The data shows an increase of more than 950 FBS players entering to the portal from August 2019-July 2020 (1,583) to August 2020-July 2021 (2,539). The NCAA has seen the most active months coming in December and January, with 38% of the 2021 entrants coming in those two months.

FBS football saw the most student-athletes enter the transfer portal (2,538) of any sport, but men's basketball had the highest percentage of student-athletes in the portal with 31% (1,692) of its athletes entering in the year 2021. FBS saw 16% of its athletes enter the portal, while women's basketball had 22% (1,134) enter during the 12-month period.
The NCAA analyzed data for all of the sports under its jurisdiction and found that only 30% (9,101) of Division I athletes who entered the portal across all sports transferred and received athletic aid at their new school, and 47% (14,293) of all entrants remain active.

Clown world, I would cut any player the second they entered the portal

Grass isn't always greener and you aren't always as good as you think you are.

I would think it’s even worse for basketball

For a lot of them, it’s not their decision.

Oh well. Sun will still come up tomorrow

Yep, it's ignorant as hell to think the majority of that 54% are entering the transfer portal because they are trying to get NIL deals elsewhere, when in reality, the majority are entering the portal because they are buried on the depth chart and are running out of time to make an impression for the NFL.

Yup. I feel 0 sympathy for some kids, up the ones getting left in the cold because the coaches are using it to cut players, that sucks for them

It's not even entirely about the NFL. A lot of these guys are buried on the depth chart and are given the "talk" after the season and are processed out so as to make room for new recruits that show more promise.

Never to be heard from again

A D1 player can’t get signed by Southern or Nichols?
I understand guys getting processed, but dudes like Koy Moore still unsigned indicates there are a lot of guys who overestimate their talent. They don’t want to hook on with Tulsa or Tulane but that is exactly where they should be

Who would risk entering the portal not knowing for sure they could get scholarship elsewhere???… seems like the dumbest shite in the world
Posted on 4/25/22 at 9:27 pm to HeLeakin
So question… are you allowed to play while you’re on the transfer portal?
Like everyone knows you’ll leave after the season and they’re okay with it but you’ll finish this current one?

Good luck fielding a full squad that isn't full of walk-ons

Pretty sure the process of entering the portal includes getting released from your scholarship, so no.
A lot of people think that entering the portal is just a declaration like recruiting commitments or Michael Scott’s public verbal declaration of bankruptcy. There’s actual paperwork involved with the school’s compliance office that has to be filled out.

Nothing groundbreaking here, but the NIL and unrestricted transfer portal will ruin college sports as we once knew it.

Good. Hopefully this model collapses on itself and college athletics can get back to what it's supposed to be.

It's funny how people get upset when a player transfers from "their" program, but they celebrate when a player transfers into "their" program.

Higher than I thought. You see a lot of stories of players just testing the waters.
