Nike with their "showcase"

quote:

It was announced Thursday that DeSoto will play St. Augustine from New Orleans in the Nike Kickoff Classic at 6 p.m. Aug. 26 in Beaverton, Ore. The NFL is partnering with Nike to put on the event, and it will be televised on the NFL Network.

quote:

“We’re a Nike school. It was a chance for our kids to go play another high-powered team across the country,” DeSoto coach Claude Mathis. “It’s going to be a national game. We’re fired up about it. I think it gives our kids an opportunity to be seen across the country. More importantly, it lets people know about DeSoto.”

I live in Allen and will be there, and they will get smoked.

Chad Morris left them high and dry. New coach is good but going to install a whole new system. It will take a while and they lost Hicks, the number 1 player in TX transferred to Katy.

That CA team has like 15 D1 players

I really don't understand public high schools spending money to send their footballs teams to play in other states unless they are getting some serious money back from the event for the school.

Otherwise, there is plenty great competition locally in Texas.

Why St. Aug? I would have thought they would want one of the better Catholic League teams or even Catholic High

The only good thing I see out of this is that the Desoto kids get to see a different part of the country. I think that’s important for HS kids.

Granted they underachieve, but they’re always loaded

That seems weird as hell

Eta
I understand it’s the Nike kickoff, but you’d think they would like to play someone from a different region.

Yes. A lot of the parents and boosters aren’t happy because Allen always hosts the kickoff classic. It’s a big charity event and they always host a big area Dallas Fort Worth team and raises a ton of scholarships for both teams. I think it was Morris that wanted to schedule an all star team from California.

Like others have said there are a dozen 6A programs around DFW that would have been great games

Duncanville
Denton Ryan
Southlake
Desoto
Trinity
Etc

Allen is in it to win national championships… their stadium and enrollment demands it

DeSoto's best athletic program is track, so not surprising that Nike is their uniform supplier.
