Yeah, you're such a "big man". Any man that goes around and degrades other men in order to appear to be a real man...that person is an insecure one.
Go ask Junior Seau's kids if they want their father back.

And it makes it no less ridiculous.
Posted on 3/17/15 at 8:20 am to SlowFlowPro
Slow your analogy is horrible. This is an individual mans opinions about his own life. War effects millions and millions of others

I'm no scholar, but I think the choice is short glory-filled life or long obscure life.
Posted on 3/17/15 at 8:22 am to boom roasted
it's not ridiculous. living a shorter life of luxury and glory v. a longer life of obscure normalcy
that is an everlasting internal human debate. it's part of our DNA and evolution as animals. in large part, the choice separates alphas from betas (the evolutionary signals certainly separate the groups' perceptions by others, namely females). this internal debate is a big part of being human

A guy who's bought and paid for by the NFL and working for a company bought and paid for by the NFL is shaming a player for retiring because of an issue that puts the NFL in a bad light? I'm shocked.

Society needs to realize athletes aren't their little play toy puppets. If someone on the money talk started a thread saying I am leaving the banking industry because "I don't like it", people wouldn't complain at all. They would say he needs to find a job he enjoys. But when a pro athlete changes his job for his own personal safety, people freak out. It is so creepy to me how people think these athletes owe them something. They don't. Period

The ridiculousness lies in the fact that Shefter has never had to make the choice and will never have to make the choice. He's judging as an outsider with no personal knowledge.
It all comes back to blind machismo and how people they think would act in a similar situation.
It's a good debate, but "shaming" someone for making a different decision is ridiculous.

Chris Borland remains a fan favorite at Wisconsin and likely will for a long time. He gave everything he had for that program. Anyone who watched him play at Wisconsin and/or with San Francisco can attest to his toughness. It was unmatched. He has essentially been playing with one arm for the past couple seasons. One NFL team took him off their draft board because his shoulder never checked out.
My favorite play of his, to this day, was him stopping Carlos Hyde dead in his tracks twice: once at midfield and once at the goal line ( LINK)
Anyway, the guy was an absolute gamer on the field and the last thing that comes to mind when I think of Chris Borland is "pussy."

No the ridiculous part is people should not care at all. If Rory Mcilroy announced tommorrow he was quitting golf to become a lawyer people would freak the hell out and bash the shite out of him, which is crazy to me. They should get to choose what they do with their lives just as everyone else. They aren't our little play toys

All the people saying the risk is worth the reward have no clue what life is like with brain damage.

he's an NFL reporter and has inside connections to plenty of players. he understands NFL life and the pulse of NFL players better than any of us do

He is still an outsider looking in. He will never have to make the choices that NFL players have to make.

so the players who play long term, we tell them tough shite they knew what they were getting into when they have major issues later in life, but when a guy makes a decision that those effects are not worth it, he's a giant pussy?

the day they stop becoming our "play toys" is the day they stop getting paid even upper middle class money to play a game
just like with borland. nobody forced him to go to the NFL. that was his choice. he entered the public domain and has to live with the reactions of the public
he'll be forgotten in a news cycle

Meh. Belichick didn't play in the NFL, but he can relate and handle players pretty easily.

ETA: We're talking about a reporter shaming a linebacker for leaving the NFL due to concerns about brain injury. I shouldn't have to explain why that's ridiculous.
