I wouldn't say trend though, I'd say new norm. Trend suggests that it will come to an end.
Well norm suggests that it is the typical behavior. Trend indicates a general direction (e.g., a linear trend); it does not suggest that it will come to end. So it may be a trend (although there are too few examples to say that), but it surely isn't a new norm.

I'm curious what his real injury history is. When I was at LSU, there was a player who started from where I'm from. Talked to him at a party, and he off handedly mentioned a number of surgeries that I, nor anyone on this website even knew happened, and he wasn't even done at LSU.

You think about that for a moment, and you think about all the routine knee cleaning surgeries and stuff like that which don't get reported, etc, and many guys have an easy half dozen (or more, who really knows) surgeries before age 25.

Borland still on his rookie deal. So it's not really comparable.

But double digit sack guys get paid. Nothing new.

It's so amazing the shaming languages Borland gets for this. Some people are quick to call him "p*ssy", "wuss", "wimp". Seems like there's a notion that if a man is not risking his life, he's not a man. I guess he's perceived as weak or scared if he chooses not to play pro football.

In reality, he's playing a game for entertainment purpose. Let's say he goes on to become a firefighter, doctor, or policeman saving lives. Would he be less of a man? I think some people need to get their priorities straight or get a real meaning of what it takes to be a man.

In 20-25 years, all of the stadiums in the NFL will be turned into soccer stadiums for MLS. Unreal...the pussification of America continues

If he wanted to "unretire" in 2 years, can any team just pick him up or would he still be contractually obligated to a cheap rookie deal?

The 49ers own his rights for the next three years.

I applaud him for doing what he believes is right. A real testament to his character.

It sucks for the fans but we're irrational and have nothing to lose. We would sacrifice the whole team for wins and championships.

What was his salary during his playing days? Honestly I don't understand why more players aren't taking the money, playing a couple of seasons and getting out. The money it too high. You will see more of this.
I wouldn't be surprised.

I mean, if you're reasonably bright at all, once you've played a couple of seasons in the NFL, you can have yourself totally set up. Especially if you are an early round pick.

I mean, the last guy picked in round 1 last year got a $3.3M signing bonus as well as making about $1.1M for the year. Even if he lost 60% between taxes and his agent, that'$1.9M left. If he played another season, he's deep into $2M

I mean really, if you walked up to the average American and told him, "I'll give you $2M right now and you can go live a fairly relaxed life OR, you can do a job that could result in serious and lifelong injury at any point(to include tomorrow) but you could make many millions more........I think most average people take the $2M and run.

Hell, if the last guy just finished out his contract, he'd have gone over $10M which means well over $4M in 4 years in his pocket.

Yep. We may see more of this from guys who know they have the brains to live just fine with that kind of start.

It won't be soccer. Soccer has a lot of concussions too. I think an eventual upswing in baseball.

A guy who never even played high school football shaming a guy because he's worries about brain injuries. Gold.

pretty sure tens of millions of people who have never gone to war have debated Achilles' choice over the course of man's history on earth

this is not some new debate. it's as old as recorded human history
