Oh shite. I wonder if this is turning into a trend.

To quit from SF? Yes it is.

To retire after one year? No

To retire in your prime with your health and enough money to be happy, absolutely.

I wouldn't say trend though, I'd say new norm. Trend suggests that it will come to an end.

I can understand his decision. He is locked into a contract that pays him less than his production at a position with high potential for permanent injury. Why would he want to play through 2018 for $730,000 when less productive players playing the same position, like Junior Galette are being paid over $10 million?

Once again, I argued in a thread during the fall that you would start to see more players retiring in their prime with all the concussion studies coming out now and I was laughed at and told athletes only wanted to compete and win and didn't care about the costs.

You're a genius.

Yeah, they get the signing bonus money when they, well, sign.

The 49ers can go after the three-fourths that hasn't already been "covered". And they probably will. I'll reverse my earlier position and say that I can't blame them. Can't have the #1 pick (or some top free agent) one year pick up 10 million and then peace out after a few months.

I doubt they sue him for it.

It wouldn't even get to that point. That matter (even if he retires) still falls under arbitration.

And it's a slam dunk from that aspect.

True. I guess I meant it in a sense of engaging in formal proceedings to recover the money, not necessarily in a court of law.

Ross Tucker said they rarely go after signing bonuses. Article on overthecap says the same thing. LINK

Eric Reid had 3 concussions in his first 2 years. He's next.

Don't have a problem with him calling it quits. I'm sure we'll start to see this more.

A) they dont play the same position.

B) Galette has 22 sacks over the past 2 years. Yea, he's a shite head, but that's a pretty good number. I'd venture to say its top 10 in the NFL over the past 2 years.

Lol. But it was worth the risk for the past 12 years of his life if not longer?

What if he finally realized that it isn't worth it. Should he be crucified for making a decision?

I must just be selfish as frick because it's totally worth the risk to live lavishly in my opionion.

Maybe they didn't want to eat a bullet one day, like Junior Seau or Duerson? Or end up like this:

What the frick? That is too bad because he was great to watch play.

When Harbaugh left, everything crumbled. Their coaching situation went from great to unknown at best and two stud linebackers retired. I think they will go like 4-12.

the old Achilles issue rears its head again

if i had that kind of talent and i had busted my arse so hard for so long to get to the NFL, i doubt i could walk away

living the prime time of your life being rich while playing the sport you love AND leaving a huge nest egg for your family is worth it to me

If you think Junior Galette is worth over 10X the money Chris Borland was paid based on productivity and contribution to an effective defense, then you are probably foolish enough to think the Saints have a legitimate shot at winning another Super Bowl before Drew Brees retires.

Galette had 10 sacks in 2014 which is pretty nice, but he had just 23 other tackles and 12 assists in 16 games. Less than 3 tackles per game ain't worth $10 million. Chris Borland had 84 solo tackles and 23 assists in 14 games. There isn't any rational reason Galette earns over 10X what Borland earns.
