You’re right. Hail Mary’s happen every single year, at least once. A 64 yard field goal has happened twice……in the history of the league.

That was one of the worst coaching decisions I’ve ever seen. Call the timeout with :50 seconds left, and go for it. If you get the first you can spike it and have ~40 seconds and TWO TIMEOUTS to work the entire field. Chances are you end up with a 40-45 yarder, at worst, in that situation.

So dumb.

Wrong. Even at 20 seconds, they could get off at least 3 plays with 3 timeouts, assuming they get the first down.

my point is that when he let the clock run down he kind of put himself in the position of having to kick it, or look like an utter retard for letting all that time run off the clock with 3 timeouts in his pocket, but i see what you mean

Kicking isn't what it used to be. Go look at Cade York's FG to win this weekend. It would have been good from 65 no problem.

A shorter kick “being good from ___” doesn’t necessarily automatically cross over to kicking from that distance. Trajectories, wind, and other variables still have to factor in the deeper you go.

If you think the current FG% is anywhere near 2 in 42, you simply haven't been paying attention.

The current FG% is 2 in 43 now, you don’t get to just make up percentages because kickers have more distance. The field goals have to actually be kicked

As I've said, at least twice, not calling the timeout immediately is the decision everyone should be mad about. The closer you can get the field goal, the better decision going for it is. Once you are out of time, going for it or not has about the same win %

Just saw a tweet, Peyton called timeout 62 times before Denver did

wide left a couple feet.

I only saw it live.
looked close

You see, when kicking a field goal, distance is only one of the factors. The further away from the goalposts, the closer they move to each other, as in, there's no margin for error in relation to the horizontal angle of the kick.

That opportunity doesn't present itself much. And, in a different game situation, teams punt it.

It presents itself all the time. Teams chose to punt or go for the conversion because they know they're not gonna make the field goal.

But, I'd bet that the Broncos had more faith in that kick than you did (given you think it's way below 33%)...

Maybe but that's because their coach is an idiot.

and I bet the statistical move is pretty close either way you go.

Its not

Such a weak argument. Conversely, if you don’t make the kick you lose. Stop ignoring that the decision was between trying to gain five yards and making a 64 yarder. It was wrong before the kick and his decision then proved it.

Dumber part was draining the clock. If you think you have a better chance of making the FG than the 4th and 5, kicking is the right call. But do it right away and use the timeouts to get the ball back.

Holy shite I didn’t even think about that, great point

Some of the posts in this thread advocating the FG as a statistical toss-up are eye-crossingly bad

What made it a tossup was having to do one thing to win as opposed to having to do 2… 4th and 5 isn’t as much a given as people think

Well, that's not really the right question either, because you still need to make the FG. What do you think the chances were of picking up 4th and 5?

They don't understand how math works, it's pointless to try to reason with them.

Neither do you and moneyg.

You pick the greater of two options.

Option 1 The chances of making the 64 yarder.

Option 2 The product of the chance of picking up 4th and 5 and the chance of making the field goal following the successful 4th down.

Justin tucker missed an XP. A 64 yarder is something you try with 2 secs left and zero options
