Crazy, I was choking last night on some chicken. Wife was gone, had to do the old finger down the throat thing to get it up. It really is a terrible feeling.

Posted by Message bayou2003 28 year old Cubs fan chokes on hot dog at the game and dies I read about that on yahoo. Wouldn't drinking something help. You'd figure a person would have a drink around while eating. But I've also read in the comment section on yahoo that hotdogs are one of the main foods that causes deaths because of the shape. I'd at least thought drinking while eating would help it go down if it starts to get stuck. Sad story.

You don't understand how breathing works do you?

If baseball and baseball fans are all about curses and karma, the Cubs are fricked.

I was pretty close when it happened. Didnt look good. EMS got there quick, within 3 minutes. Some older woman next to us was doing CPR on her before EMS got there

If I read the article correctly, did folks not realize she was choking until much later on? Did they do CPR on her without moving the obstruction?

I read somewhere that if you're coughing and gagging that means that the airway is only partially blocked. If you're not making any noises, not flailing around the airway is entirely blocked.

But I still don't understand how nobody noticed the fact that she fell into their row and seat.

What??

There's this act called chewing your food where items of all shapes and sizes are magically turned into a mush that's usually pretty easy to swallow. Are that many people eating hot dogs (non competition of course) without chewing them before swallowing? Does the shape of the hot dog cause people to say "frick it. I don't have time to chew this thing. I'm just gonna swallow it whole."

Apparently, there are:

quote:

Foods to avoid: 3 to 5 years Choking hazards: Your child is a very competent eater now, but you should still be on the lookout for pieces of food that he could choke on. Keep cutting his food into small pieces, especially things like grapes and pieces of hot dog that could completely block his airway if inhaled. Continue to avoid popcorn, whole nuts, hard candies, and chewing gum. And discourage your child from eating when distracted.

I guess her extra 23 to 25 years experience with eating didn't come in handy.
