Bortoleto is not penalized for passing under red flag in FP3.
Tsunoda, P11 in Q2, has a 10-place grid penalty for passing under red flag in FP3. So he'll be starting dead last.
Hadjar, who has made it into Q3, should be getting a grid penalty after qualy is over for impeding Sainz in Q1.

The C6 tire still sucks.
Edit: Looks like the C6 is ultimately still faster than the C5, but just barely, and it seems a lot harder to manage.
Nope, I was right the first time, the C6 sucks. P1 George and P2 Max did their fast laps on the C5. P4 Antonelli and P6 Alonso also did their final runs on mediums, but I'm not sure if they improved their times.

Bad luck for Charl. He's been having a solid year.

A lot of people mad at Hadjar today, but he wasn't that close to Shaarl when Shaarl got to that corner then complained about dirty air.
Traffic here somehow seems worse than Monaco.
Oh, and Piastri in P3. He seemed to struggle in every practice session, then suddenly he shines again in qualy, and Lando is left down in P7. Amazing.

Nice, Jean Alesi on F1TV. Wasn't Canada his only win? I remember he said a couple of laps before the end of the race, he was crying, and every time he braked, his tears would shoot onto the face shield.
Also, Jacques Villeneuve talking to the drivers after qualy. I haven't seen him doing the pundit thing yet. He's always great for harsh commentary.
Maybe he's on the other TV feed.

Oscar is just better.

So does Max steer into George or George into Max in turn 1?

George is such a beta. If this was NASCAR, we’d see an actual fight.

Yuki got straight hosed by the FIA with that red flag infringement.
Said he should stay behind Piastri even though the dude is in limp home mode. fricking.bullshite.

It is crazy the bad luck yuki has had since being promoted to Red Bull.

A 10-place penalty is total BS. When you think of cars working their way back to the pits during a red flag, you're thinking of the undamaged cars getting back in an orderly manner.
But this incident involves the damaged car itself, continuing to move instead of stopping. In Miami, Shaarl was given a reprimand for attempting to get back to the pits after crashing his car. Piastri hit the wall in front of the pits, which means he had to go around a complete lap with a damaged right rear. There are two issues with this scenario:
1. Shaarl was given a reprimand for driving a damaged car, risking dropping dangerous debris on the track. Piastri had to do a complete lap with a damaged car. Tsunoda said he felt it was safer to pass because he was afraid of coming in contact with debris being shed by Piastri's damaged car. In particular, he said he thought the tire carcass was going to come completely off the rim.
2. Since a damaged car is allowed to limp back to the pits, there is a judgment call here. At some point, a damaged car might be going slow enough that the other cars need to be able to pass it. The drivers shouldn't be put in that position to make the judgment call and face a possibly penalty. Apparently (according to reddit), Hamilton's engineer instructed him to not pass Piastri, but Tsunoda was not given any instructions by his team. Again, the issue is how to deal with the damaged car trying to make it back to the pits and going slower than normal.
I'm not saying there should be no penalty, but a 10-place grid penalty means that it was an egregious violation. It wasn't, there were no workers on the track, and Piastri was in control of his car, just going slow and dropping debris. A 3-place penalty should have been enough.

As someone new to F1, where could I watch the qualifying? All I saw on watchESPN yestersay evening was the Spanish one.

Do you have a service with ESPN? Like YouTube TV, as an example? I have that and have every F1 event recorded, but sometimes the event is on the ABC affiliates broadcasts and those you need to watch live, like when it is in Montreal, Miami, Austin and Las Vegas. Then, it records but you have to start live. After the event, I can watch from the start. Otherwise, I can be 30 minutes late to watch but start at the beginning.

George got pole last year. Can he get pole this year? Both Mercedes looking good so far.
Turns out…
Happy for him. Been a rough few weeks.
Nice change of pace vs Oscar running away with it all. Diverse grid at the top, hope it’s interesting.

Due to work and grad school summer courses, I had to miss all the FP sessions this week. During qualy, I heard Crofty say that Oscar decided not to take their new front wing upgrades for this race, but Lando did.
Without knowing anything about the upgrades, I wonder if that can account for some of the difference in qualifying results.

Compare and contrast the situations of Tsunoda going around a damaged car in a completely controlled and verstappen intentionally ramming his car into another driver while both were racing.
Then compare the penalties assessed for each situation.

Congrats to Robert Kubica for the overall win at Le Mans. A devastating crash in Canada effectively ended his F1 career 18 years ago so nice to see him still having success.
