The open park between sprint and race is an important innovation at the debut at #ChineseGP . The ideal setup for a 100km race is very different from that for a 300km one. In the sprint you could be aggressive on almost all parameters, including ground clearance, suspension setup, aerodynamics and engine consumption, almost a qualifying setup old style. But the limitations are still stringent, between just one hour of FP and the limited number of sets of tyres, it is difficult for the teams to risk going into the race in the dark... Who will be on the safe side by using the sprint as a free practice and who will try instead to maximize by trusting the sim? Teams with a lot of collaboration could totally separate work in FP. It will then be interesting to evaluate if and how much the teams will change between the sprint and the race. More in the article ??

I could see some lower tier teams absolutely going for it in the sprints with aggressive setups. Give Albon or Hulk a super aggressive setup and hope for 1 or 2 points. Both of those guys are capable of Q3. So say you start 9 or 10, you can maybe get a good start and pass one or two, and bam, decent points.
We know Merc has shite sim correlation. RBR, Ferrari, and Mclaren seem to have things dialed in between the sim and physical car. Mclaren comes right out and says "nah mate, we're shite on this track in the sims. This track isn't for us."

I totally agree! While there is a clear separation on race pace between the top 5 teams and the bottom 5 teams over a grand prix length, there are some bottom 5 teams that can sneak into Q3 on single-lap pace. The best example this year so far is Yuki, who has gotten to Q3 in the last three races. Yuki, Hulk and Albon are capable of qualifying high and holding on to their position for one stint. Focusing on the sprint race is probably an easier way to snag a point or two, although limiting points to just the top 8 makes it tougher!
In Brazil last year, Yuki and Danny qualified P6 and P8 for the sprint. Yuki hung on to P6 and scored 3 points, while Danny dropped one position and didn't score. In the main race Yuki finished P9 (for a total of 5 points!) so the car was definitely good that weekend, while Danny got hit by a flying tire at the start and ended up a lap down.

Didn’t realize there’s supposed to be big news for the COTA concerts that are going to impact ticket prices soon.
Can’t think of too many better artists than last year’s Queen and the Killers personally but we’ll see.

Interestingly the Haas is better on track than the sim.

?? Ferrari: #AMuS points out that the SF-24 should have a sharper front end at Imola with the first big improvement.
Last year, Leclerc did better than Sainz. The latter benefits more from the fact that the SF-24 is so docile.
Ferrari has planned the big package for Imola. According to Vasseur, new pieces would already have been possible in Miami. But Miami is a sprint weekend with only one free practice session. In addition, there would not have been enough spare parts. And we should have put pressure on suppliers. As everything is going well at the moment, we opted for safety in Imola.

Current F2 champion Theo Pourchaire has been confirmed to drive the #6 McLaren in the Long Beach IndyCar race on Sunday, in place of the injured David Malukas, still recovering from pre-season hand/wrist surgery. Callum Illott drove in the first two events but has WEC commitments this weekend. Also, next weekend is a race at Barber Motorsports Park. No word yet on whether Malukas will be back or if Illott or Pourchaire will sub. Illott is more of a known quantity, so it would be nice for Pourchaire to do a race on a proper road course, assuming he performs well this weekend.

How can Honda and Lawrence be taken seriously when they insist on a one-car team?! Honda should be demanding that the team put in the effort to maximize their constructors points since tens of millions of dollars are at stake.

Stroll leads FP1 over Oscar and Max!
Both Mercedes drivers and Alonso were the only drivers who didn't use softs.
That was one weird session.

Here's the FP1 chart if you want to see the crazy variety of approaches that the teams took for the only practice session of the weekend, with sprint qualy coming up.
1. McLaren, VCARB, and Stroll did most, and Mercedes and Alonso did all of their laps on hards.
2. RBR, Haas, Williams, and Sauber did most of their laps on mediums.
3. Ferrari and Alpine did all of their laps on softs. I'm guessing that they believe they can do the sprint race on softs?
No team gained knowledge of all three compounds. I'm really surprised that none of the teams split the tire use between their drivers so they could test all three compounds.
