The race itself was ok;

The coverage OTOH was hot garbage. FOX should be ashamed of themselves.

Tony Stewart was terrible with any meaningful race incite or annalysis. I get it he's a popular driver but he was just there for platitudes for whatever Bowyer and Joy were talking about.

Interesting.
I find Bowyer annoying.
His use of “hot rod” is no longer cute.
And “he got underneath of him” is just too much.
I don’t want Stewart or Gordon in the booth. Owner and owner’s lackey.

But I like Jr. In the booth so I’m a hypocrite. Sue me. Haha!

Logano is gonna be really good when he gets in the booth after he's done.

Harvick is going full-time in the booth next year w/Joy and Bowyer and from the times I've seen him doing truck/Xfinity races he's really good and you know he's gonna say what's on his mind.

As much as I like Mike Joy, I think it’s about time for him to retire. FOX should go get Bestwick.

This has nothing to do with any discussion here, but I was talking about yesterday at a dedicated racing forum that I follow, and the topic was how many freak winners there have been at the 500 with all the madness at the end under the current rules, and wondering if that’s actually cheapening the significance of winning “NASCAR’s biggest race.”

What say y’all about that?

Also, one of the names mentioned was Derrike Cope, and I stepped up and questioned that.

First off, that was a totally different era and circumstances, and most of the folks who were upset about it were upset at Earnhardt’s misfortune.

But I felt compelled to point out that Cope backed that fluke up with a no doubts at all about it win at Dover, which is not an easy place to win at then or now, later the same year, and came within a half a second at the line of pulling out a third win in Bobby Allison’s car at Phoenix in 1995, in a race that he led a significant portion of.

Guy became a punch line because he couldn’t give it up, but IMO he was a stout driver at his peak. He just had bad luck when the Whitcomb team imploded like it did, then he got caught in a time of transition when it started getting difficult to get good rides unless you had connections, plus even though he was a decent looking guy, he had this funny voice/accent that I don’t think really was conducive to moving a sponsor’s product and that was becoming an increasingly important part of a driver’s job description

Every restrictor plate race is a crap shoot. These are the races the small teams actually have a chance to win. Now only 3 a year, and its really the only chance some of these teams will ever have.

Just to illustrate how strange it is. Suarez spun out to cause the first GWC restart. Then there was one more GWC restart. He finished 6th. Tell me another track he could do that at in only 2 real green laps (both restarts never went 2 full laps). Its a small team dream race.

So in that regard yes it can diminsh the value. The top teams are racing at front with all the risk all race long. Backmarkers hang around for wrecks to scoop up the scraps and occasionally get a win.

As I recall Cope was running up toward the front for most of that 500 and he had Buddy Parrott as crew chief. The car was fast and they weren't all equal/in a pack like they are today.

It was a fluke win yes, but it's not like he just completely fell into it. He was going to be second if not for Earnhardt's flat.

That Purolator car of Cope’s IMO was one of the sharpest looking NASCAR paint schemes ever.

Yeah like I said totally different circumstances from, say, a McDowell or Stenhouse ending up in front in the 500 after all the carnage,

I just went back and looked at the last lap and it was Earnhardt, Cope, T. Labonte and Awesome Bill nose to tail.

Cope was stout, he closed right up to Earnhardt’s bumper going into 1, Earnhardt pulled him off 2, Cope got close again on the backstretch but it didn’t look to me that Labonte or Elliott were anxious to go with him, maybe because he was an unknown quantity?

Then it became academic.

Agree that the restrictor plate races are a crap shoot and it provides the best opportunity for smaller teams win races. However, since this new car came into play, I think smaller teams have been given better opportunities to run better with a chance to win outside of Daytona and Dega.

Depends on the end of the race. When Brad and Kyle made their moves it felt like a real Daytona 500. BradK pushing the 17 way ahead in the corner, catching back up to him by the straights then tandeming him into the next corner. That's how it use to be, skill and teamwork. Then they had the late yellow and it turned into a crapshoot. Once it turns into a crapshoot it cheapens the event.

That's the worst broadcast of any race in my 35 years of following NASCAR.

4 laps then commercial. Then when they come back it's another 5 min of some bullshite rather than showing the fricking race.

They just do such a shitty job of building any kind of drama. The Daytona 500 should be drama filled and sold as a high stakes marathon with storylines being told throughout with a buildup to the last 20 laps of a HIGH drama race to the win of one of the 5 biggest events in motorsports worldwide.

But, no storyline or rhythm can be established because it’s so chopped up with the stages and commercials. So it’s a shite show and you’ve got Mike Joy going overboard on his talking to the dumbest listeners and Bowyer being the class clown.

No professionalism, and what really sucks is Ken Squier ain’t walking through the door.

I heard on the radio just now that NASCAR and the NBA are the only two sports without a current rivalry.

I've quickly tired of Boyer's schtick.

He has some good/funny comments now and then but more and more he's coming across as a redneck frat boy.
