Speaking of being back

Did anyone watch this? They also did it for the Hungarian GP but I don't think it was shown in the US. Personally, I think it is great and really well done. They have an adult and three kids commenting on the race, there were several times they were more insightful than the adults are. They have more kid-friendly graphics too.

It was on ESPN U this morning, I only noticed it because my DVR picked it up. You may be able to stream it from ESPN or F1 TV I haven't checked either. The kids really know their way around racing, very cool to see.

I've been hanging out with my usual F1 crew that I know IRL but it has been brutal because they are mainly Merc, McLaren, and RB fans and all the rest except for two are anyone but Ferrari. The season has made it difficult to muster enough enthusiasm to bifurcate my time.

I am happy to see The Scuderia get a win (wish it had been last week) but almost equally as happy that RB got their potential perfect season ended. I am a bit split on that because if they had done it they would have beaten McLaren's 1988 season which some of you know my hate for McLaren is unparalleled.

Thanks, I'll check for it next race and record if it's on.

Can someone explain what type of situation/scenario calls for that Sainz strategy today?

Meaning, he purposely was holding up the entire field, going as slow as he is could while keeping the lead.

I know they mentioned at one point if Max were to pit he'd go from I think 3 to 18 and it was maybe halfway through the race which is unusual, and it's because of that Ferrari strategy.

But I'm curious what factors are in play that would make a team do that? I don't recall ever seeing that or at least not that obvious in my couple years watching F1.

I think their strategy was to get the cars behind him all in a DRS train. It’s hard to pass on that circuit. It’s even harder to pass when all the cars are stuck in a DRS train.

It seems that Ferrari was fast enough on the straights to render the DRS of McLaren and Mercedes useless. At least that was my perception. We also know that Ferrari was strong in all of those low speed corners.

I think it’s clear now that Ferrari has indeed turned their engine mode up some starting with Monza. That’s my take.

As I saw it, the Ferrari strat was to go only fast enough to keep the lead while preserving the tires. While they have improved in that area, they are still not great compared to the other teams. The longer they went the more likely to catch a SC for a "free" pitstop.

Also, by keeping the field somewhat together that meant anyone attempting an undercut would end up mired in traffic versus having clear track where they could make time.

As the race went on and it appeared they may have to pit without a safety car the team started tell Chuck to back up a bit to open the gap to Sainz as additional insurance against the Mercs or Norris succeeding with an undercut should they pit before Carl.

The teams can calculate where each car will end up after a pitstop, assuming a normal stop, and will keep track of this to have an idea when the other teams may stop. They usually avoid pitting when they will end up in a train if they can. Ferrari may have seen some clear track opening up back in the pack which the Mercs could take advantage of, prompting them to tell Chuck to open the gap between himself and the leading Ferrari.

The last two races have been my favorite of the season. There seems to have been more prevalent strategy that the fan sees happening. The racing has been great. Really once we started seeing Mclaren start raising their game it seemed like things started to even out. There has been good progress from all teams on the garage. Happy for checo.

Yes. It seemed Ferrari's strat was just to preserve the tire and make a one stop work.

Everyone else seem ok with that idea until Merc rolled the dice.

Had Mclaren pitted a second time Lando would probably have taken the win, but those Mercs have had better race pace than pretty much everyone else so maybe it ends up pretty much the same.

I really think we are just watching RBR play a cat and mouse where teams are catching up, but they have no worries because they have upgrades waiting that will keep them far ahead.

That was a hell of a race from Sainz, and I loved what Merc did pitting under the VSC. It was fun watching George and Lewis catch up to them so fast. And genius of Sainz to let Norris stay close enough to get DRS to hold off the Mercedes but not close enough to pass him. It says something about the Ferrari team that they didn't know that he was doing that, considering their warning that Norris was .8 seconds behind and Sainz was like "yeah i'm doing it on purpose guys." That was a lot of fun. Also, Verstappen still had a hell of a race. He probably wins without the shite luck on safety cars.

Piastri moving from 17th to 7th was quite the improvement

I believe he would have come out behind Russell, so he probably stays in 2nd but Russell would likely get the pass on Sainz and get the win in that scenario, as I understood it.

You are probably right on that.

The Ferrari split strategy at the beginning kind of halfway worked. I think everyone knew they wouldn't ask Sainz to switch; but that was probably the right move to let Leclerc pull a pretty good lead then take the 1 2.
