Alpine - Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly
McLaren - Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris
AlphaTauri - Nyck De Vries, Yuki Tsunoda
I'm absolutely intrigued by these matchups. Gasly had a tough year last year and is now in a new car. I hope he will get up to speed quickly and provide some competition for Ocon. I have no idea how Piastri will do compared to Lando, but I fear de Vries will show up Yuki pretty quickly. This may be Yuki's last year in F1.

Haas - Kevin Magnussen, Nico Hulkenberg
Williams - Alexander Albon, Logan Sargeant
Is Hulk too old to come back? I would have rather seen another young gun in the seat. I don't really have an impression of Sargeant, but I expect Albon to be the clear leader.
I'm not expecting any surprises from the rest of the team matchups.

Haas could improve in standings simply by making better decisions and tactics. They lost so many spots in multiple races solely on bad tactics. If they improve in that area plus with a better 2nd driver, how many spots can they gain? Same with Ferrari

No worries, just thought we had discussed because this because last year the thread was like 50 pages prior to the first race... We went balls deep on pre-season chat
Cool. There was a clamoring the other day for a season thread so I figured I'd get to work. Apologies if I jumped the gun.
I'm actually on my way to Costa Rica but I'll try to keep up best I can. If any of you feel like something needs to be added to the OP, just lmk.

There should be a new thread for every race IMO.
Jumping into season long threads for casual watchers isn't appealing. Just MHO.

Could probably get away with having the season long then a thread for each week.

Thanks for starting the thread!
Coincidentally, Drive to Survive Season 5 hits Netflix the next day!

Haas made some bad strategy calls, but always seemed to get fricked with cautions and the meatball flag.

Not a big fan of the Hulk hire but the team wanted a driver that would help develop the car, so I can see why they didn't go with a young gun.
He brings the car home as well. Not as likely to bring it back in two pieces as happened a couple times last year.

Max fan here but hoping for a more exciting season this year.

Can you imagine had he walked back there to see a grisly sight? Yikes. He may have never been the same after that, had it been really bad.

and I enjoyed 2022 seeing Max win the title and the record for most victories in a season.
But I am ready for some chaos! I am really looking forward to seeing how young Mr. Piastri does with McLaren. I am anticipating him giving Norris fits and challenging for position. I am ready to see Ferrari kicking some butt and if Leclerc and Sainz can stop fricking around and quit making stupid mistakes.
2023, baby! Let's go!

Without any F1 for a little while, come over to IMSA for the Daytona 24 this weekend. Season thread is active.

Many thanks for the thread, sir.

A couple of questions I've been wondering what the board thinks...
1.) Which driver, Ocon or Gasly, will win the qualifying head-to-head matchup at Alpine in 2023?
2.) Which rookie driver finishes with the most points in 2023?
Looking forward to a great, French GP-less Formula 1 season in 2023.

Def rooting for Leclerc this year… hopefully with bozo gone, he won’t get fricked like last year.

Apologies. I did the preseason thread last year but had a lot of stuff going on with work this year and failed.

There’s no casual here, my friend.

Ferrari made multiples more mistakes than their drivers last year

I think this board underrates Ocon a bit for some reason. Gasly is a bit of an unknown. He struggled at Red Bull, and he struggled with the redesigned AT last year. He might struggle with the Alpine if it doesn't suit him. I think Ocon is the easy bet.
I think Piastri and de Vries will both do well, but Piastri is in the better car (presumably) so that's an easy call. But that doesn't mean he has a better year. What if Piastri gets beat comprehensively by Lando while gathering up some points, and de Vries beats Yuki consistently, while scraping at the bottom of the points scoring positions? One might be able to argue that de Vries has a better year despite scoring fewer points.

Excellent point (NPI).
I think Gasly will perform well even in his first year at Alpine.
I also think Williams is a team to watch out for in 2023, so Sargeant could end up with a decent points haul for a rookie.

Hope you are right about Williams, but I don't see them with any direction yet. Hell, the powers that be just decided to replace the main guy a week ago. That disorganization is going to be another year or so.
