I'm also fine with what happened in the context of the current rule set, and if they break the rules again it should happen again. But why wouldn't you just eliminate the possibility of ever being in the position where you have to change a race outcome if youre able to do so?
As we speak, Nascar is doing open heart surgery on Hamlin and Bush's cars. They are going to look at every bolt and nut on these cars.
Nascar inspectors are also getting a crash course on how these drivers and crews are trying to modify these brand new Next-Gen cars. That's hard to impossible to do with all those cars pre-race. Nascar knows they are constantly playing catchup. Like everyone else.

They didn't have to tear the car completely apart to find what they found on the 11 and 18. A lot of DQ-worthy infractions are going to be something to do with aero. And you can still do a total teardown of the top 3-5 and maybe another random car or two if you really wanted to after the race. I am just of the belief that as a sanctioning body you leave no stone unturned when it comes to the reputation of your sport. Bill France wasn't perfect, but he understood that. More, even over the top oversight isn't a bad thing.

I know NASCAR has changed how many inspections they have now and when they have them over the last few years. Can someone give me an actual list of what inspections take place each weekend and which cars are subject to inspection during a given inspection?
Is it now just one inspection on Friday (or Thursday) when they unload them and then a post-race inspection for the top 3 after the race or are there more inspections in between?

Everyone goes through inspection, it depends on the format of the weekend as to when. They even stream the hawkeye scanner to youtube when the cars are pushed through. You dont really see anything other than a light show though. Then after the race the top 5 and two randoms are inspected. In this case the infraction was under the wrap where the team had added material to the front facia, but it was not visible until the wrap was pulled. I think the random cars go back to the R&D center every week. they have said that after the post race inspection is when results would be official, no more waiting til Wednesday for the detailed tear down. Teams could get punished for infractions in the detail teardown, but results would not change. Like for the 6 car earlier this year and the underbody changes they had made.

IOW: We cheated, we know we cheated, got caught, so there is no need to appeal and we won't cheat again.

Just a bit of tape nothing to see here
Posted on 7/25/22 at 4:17 pm to Roll Tide Ravens
It was vinyl not tape. They acted like its no big deal when earlier this season Kyle was told to pit his car after the pit crew applied tape to grill like old days. The new gen car its specifically prohibited to place any tape anywhere except wreck repair.
Gibbs teams would not have done this unless it provided some advantage. There is no reason to randomly put extra vinyl underneath wrap for no reason. They cheated (power to them) and got caught. Not fighting it says it was some type aero advantage.

I don’t have any issues with them attempting this, mind you. Such shenanigans and envelope pushing (and sometimes tearing) have been going on in NASCAR since Day One. There have been some deviously creative people come through the garage in 70-plus years.
But when you’re this level of busted, you don’t whine, you take your medicine and move on.

Yep.
Hell, I know damn well both Evernham and Knaus probably did worse than this and never got caught.

20 square inches of tape can make a lot of difference in down force and handling on a car going 170 MPH. I am guessing it had a lot to do with how well they ran in the race.
The guy who was supposed to go tear that shite off the car after the race is RUNOFT

But here's the real deal. Both were in the playoffs before and are still in the playoffs.
Where's the REAL penalty for cheating?

Wait til Tue
Keslowski
Docked Keselowski 100 driver points.
Deducted 100 points from RFK Racing in the owner standings.
Penalized the team 10 playoff points.
Fined crew chief Matt McCall $100,000 and suspended him for the next four Cup points events.
—-
They couldn’t DQ his race finish because it was found at Nascar shop not at the track. So if they do the same then the at track penalties should be separate.
At least thats how I read it and people reporting on it. Should know Tue
What they likely do: Will say at track penalty is enough and no more. This means Kes got screwed because his car was a random pick to take back to Nascar and was found later in week.
Anything less than Kes is a crock.

Top regular season finishers get extra playoff points (stay with until final playoff race).
Chase is way up in the field so he would get 15. Hamlin lost 5 playoff points (and Bush 1) and they can’t get them back. That could matter in playoffs.

Losing a win is a pretty big deal.

Sure, but it's not a PENALTY in terms of long term playoff repercussions. They're still in.
They want to penalize the 11 and 18. Make them playoff ineligible. THAT's a penalty.

I think making both team ineligible is a bit too much. I do think some playoff points should be deducted though.

Yeah, that's a bit dramatic. Some points would be fine.
It's NASCAR, there's always been cheating. It's just what it is.
