i enjoy seeing gravel sections in races not for the sake of selling gravel bikes, but as a reminder that all bikes are gravel bikes.

that is, your road bike will do just fine on gravel.

It is all about triggering N+1.

When everyone was moving to dual-suspension XC bikes in the late 90s I was ridding all but the most technical (Upstate SC/Western NC) trails on my cross bike. While I couldn't bomb the downhills I could smash people on the climbs and I was always a better descender so it helped my weakness. I did spend a lot of time trueing wheels though. Hell I still race a dinosaur. My favorite XC race bike is a late 90s Rocky Mountain Team Only Vertex 26er hardtail. It is a V-Brake bike (yep I said it) runs Mavic 517 Citron hoops on Chris King hubs and an original Rock Shock SID fork up until two years ago when I couldn't get parts to rebuild it anymore. It weighs under 18 pounds and is a rocket ship on courses like Tsali.

I have to admit I have had my eye on the Niner MCR dual-suspension gravel frame but I would ride it on singletrack. What I really want is someone to build a gravel bike with a unistrut rear like the Litespeed Unicoi with maybe 50mm of travel and optimized for 100mm up front.

Number of positive tests on the test day at the Giro. Michelton and Jumbo pulled out

Doubt the Vuelta is happening either

Saw that. Hopefully they can complete the Giro, but wow what a reduced field.

Was happy to see Sagan get his first win, and to see Brandon M. get second.

Bump. The current stage almost over; about 12K to go. Peloton down 1:20. Probably going to be a bunch sprint.

Haven’t watched the stage today yet, been a busy day. Is it worth watching? I wouldn’t watch the entire stage probably the last 20K or so.

The last 20 (maybe 15k) is probably worth a watch.

Meant to post this earlier and forgot. There was a leaked UCI email that indicates bike design rules are about to change.

Cycling Tips

I would guess we are going to see some serious aero changes with the tubes. If they could just figure out a way to make the big bluff body powering the whole thing more aero.

I've never understood the UCI and their rules. I'd much prefer to see them take a stance like the World Athletics takes on gear. If it's widely available to the public and is powered by your own body, what's the harm in letting these guys ride superbikes?

I read that Brandon McNulty, a 22 yr old American in his first grand tour, finished second to Sagan the other day. Then he had another top 10 stage finish. Has a shot to get in top 10 of GC.

Yep, second to Sagan the other day after riding back from a puncture. And he led out his teammate Ulissi today, who won the stage. He's in 11th now, just 10 seconds off 10th place and 2:45 down on the race leader.

he should get some time back in tomorrow's TT, as well as the final time trial in milan.

Ganna wins the TT convincingly McNulty in third which moves him to 4th in the overall.

And here come the mountains!!!! Tomorrow isn't the worst but the pain is coming Wed, Thu and Saturday. The GC boys will finally come out to play.

missed a few stages but watched today's stage.

Looks like it will be a fight between Almeida and Kelderman now 15 seconds seperate them. Team Sunweb looks like the strongest in the Giro

There is a lot of serious racing left so anything could happen but after watching the Piancavallo climb I would say it is Kelderman's to lose. That said the 3 big mountain stages left could produce big time swings.

Giro: hill stage today. The lone race leader has a 12 min lead on the main group. He still has one climb to go so he may not hold it.

Edit: two riders in front 5k to go.

Edit 2: Tratnik wins stage 16. Not sure if any of the jerseys will change but I doubt it.

Also Vuelta under way. Hill stage but a summit close to the finish line. Roglic takes stage 1 of the Vuelta.

BTW Sepp Kuss wearing the Polka Dot Jersey in the Vuelta (I guess we call it the Polka Dot Jersey). He gained 10 points on the final climb of the day.

I have never said this about cycling before but there is too much going on.

The Tour of Flanders was in its own way epic. A breakaway with Julian Alaphilippe, Van der Poel, and Van Aert. JA hitting a motorbike and ending his year. Then a photo finish with Mathieu and Wout at the end with Mathieu outgunning Wout to the line.

Final km of Flanders YT

The Vuelta has started and the "real" Giro starts tomorrow. I haven't been this oversaturated with pro cycling since the Lance TdF days when I would get up watch the stage and then watch the "expanded" coverage of that stage at night. I have been having to watch races while on the trainer instead of riding outside and I freaking HATE riding indoors.
