How does he hit the motorcycle?
They were all in a neat line drafting the motorcycle, the motorcycle slowed down to stop. Wout was able to ease out of the way, Mathieu had JUST enough time to avoid hitting it and Julian just didn't have enough time and clipped the side of one of the bike's rigid bags. Seeing him writhe and wail in pain was brutal.

Finished the first Vuelta stage. Things I didn't expect to see in 2020 back in January. Chris Froome of the back on "baby" climbs while the rest of Ineos is upfront hammering the pace. Guess Froome needs to change numbers with Carapaz. Kuss looks to be in great form as does Roglic. Fromme over 11 minutes out after one stage. Ineos' big guns look like they will be 0 for 3 this GT season.

So much bike racing to watch,
I was thinking more fireworks might happen today in the Giro, didn’t get too much. Hopefully tomorrow will have some.
Vuelta has been fun so far, just getting around to watching stage two. It’s hard to watch a couple hours of the giro than turn around and watch a couple hours of this race. Thankfully the Vuelta is still early. But there have been some intense racing already in the first stages.

Did Martinez start today for EF?

Well, the GC riders have to do something either tomorrow or Saturday* because it is unlikely much time will be given or taken on Friday or the 10 mile ITT on Sunday.
The Giro has been a letdown so far for me after the awesome tour but the Vuelta looks like it might be great.
* with the French not allowing the Giro into France the route change for Saturday takes out a major climb so if anyone is going to challenge Joao they better get after it tomorrow.

Yes but WELL off the lead finishing in the same group as Froome today ~18 minutes down. Froome BTW is 5th among the Ineos riders almost 30 mins out of the Maillot Rojo after only two stages. Carapaz looks strong though, would only be 1 second behind Roglic except for Roglic's 10 extra bonus seconds.

This years Giro just doesn’t have the same type of summit finishes as the tour did. Yesterday was a summit finish I think, but the inclines were bellow 3% near the finish line. Not much for a professional rider. They said in the commentary even though it was a 1st category climb it was more like a 2nd category climb.
I want to see some fireworks today, at-least on the biggest climb of the day which I believe is a beyond category climb. The climb is 24K about and averages around 8%. The last climb of the day is just under 9k and doesn’t summit at the finish.
The Vuelta has been more interesting and more of what I saw in the tour. A select group in peloton with some GC contenders unable to keep the pace. I think seven riders were left in the front group a lone rider got about a 20 second gap on the contenders. A fun race to watch and what I hope to see tomorrow in the giro. Keep in mind the Vuelta was a hill stage yesterday, but despite that the race is being broken up like a mountain stage. I can’t imagine what the true mountain stages will look like.

Well well after 2 and a half weeks of a near processional Giro a bike race broke out. I won't fully spoil this early since multiple races are going on but the upper end of the GC saw a lot of movement.
Switching to the Vuelta this is commitment.

I’m watching the replay of the Giro right now. I’ll have to finish it tonight. But unless it all comes back together there are some huge gaps being opened up right now. I won’t spoil it either but the GC will look much different tomorrow.
The highest climb of the day is brutal.
This is more of what I was hoping to see. GC contenders dropping off the main pace up front. Stuff like this is why I love bike racing!

My head is about to explode trying to keep up with all of this. I watched a replay of Flanders and epic as always.

He was better today, even did a strong turn at the front on the bottom slopes of the final climb before falling back.

Two flat stages today but that doesn’t mean we may see some action.
Apparently the weather was horrible to start the Giro today so the stage was shortened because of the weather and the riders saying we don’t want to ride in it.
Tomorrow in the Giro will be another tough day. Due to France preventing the Giro from entering the country they will go over the same climb three times. It’s a tough one so I’m hoping for some fireworks like we saw yesterday.

Are they going to be able to climb Tourmalet in Vuetta?

Well, it's on. The penultimate day in the Giro and the last mountains. Will one of the Sunweb riders have to sacrifice their podium for the other, how much pressure can Ineos apply, will Bilbao sneak onto the podium if someone cracks? With the top three clustered within 15 seconds now will they still be close enough tomorrow that the short ITT might actually have Maglia Rosa implications? Another ITT performance for the top spot in GC would be epic.
As I sit, watch and enjoy some Belgian Gatorade* I pray to the cycling gods for a day filled with full commitment to Mach V. A-Merckx.
* what? It is late not early!

pretty impressive that Ineos was able to get a podium position after losing their favorite so early in this race. Ineos will be putting pressure on Sunweb today. I believe we will see some action on the second climb possibly but for sure on the final climb of the day.
edit: action is picking up but I won't spoil it for those not watching.

wait... does the Giro really have the tie for the GC lead heading into the final day ITT?

Indeed it does at least less than one second.

Not only that I say Ineos WINS the Giro and with a British cyclist. I would have believed that 2 weeks ago but if you told me it wasn't Thomas I would have looked at you like this:
My bets are Ganna wins the stage Hart puts 30+ seconds into Hindley winning the Giro and Kelderman holds the last podium position.

I had saved the end of the Vuelta until after a lot of football but after seeing it I gotta bitch about the Vuelta officials. I know leniency is given for times when there is only a small gap between wheels at the end of the race but Roglic got robbed of 4 seconds, and maybe they won't matter but as the Giro is showing they certainly can. I (sorta) have no issue with the 3km rule and Martin getting the same time as Carapaz but Rolglic (4th) was absolutely clear of Grobschartner (5th) and Grobschartner was certainly clear of the group with Carapaz. The provisional classification gave Roglic a (conservative) 1 second over Grobschartner and 4 seconds over the Carapaz group. Roglic DESERVED those 4 seconds and none of the Carapaz group was hindered by the accident. Roglic worked for that gap and damn sure should have gotten it.
This isn't name, this is cycling, and they're damn sure (should be) rules.
Now, it looks like Roglic actually caused the crash by swinging a little wide on the turn and clipping Rojas' front wheel. If you are going to penalize him then do it. I don't know if they thought the 4 seconds was for the infraction but if so that is bullshite. Either actually, penalize him or don't.

Cofidis question...
Are they allowed to win a stage in any race? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of their riders win a stage ever.
