Cofidis question...

Are they allowed to win a stage in any race?

It has been over 20 years since they were a "top" WorldTeam. It has been years since they have had a top 10 in a GT and probably Monuments as well. Bobby Julich at the tour in the late 90s was probably the last podium they had at a GT. As far as stage wins they probably have one major stage win every couple of years but it is rare. Jesus Herrada probably had a couple but I don't actually remember one. Bouhanni may have won some sprint stages but the wins I am thinking of may have been in his FDJ days.

I got up early but forgot the Giro starts late. The Vuelta is rolling and we may have some fun with the finish at the top of a 1st Cat climb. The Giro ITT will be interesting but I think Hart wins the stage and the race by 20+ seconds.

Hart on the road. About a min till the last rider on the road.

Hindley now on the road.

Hindley keeps dropping his head. Kills your aerodynamics.

Hindley needs to get to a wind tunnel in the offseason and get a different helmet. That position would be bad for a club rider.

What a finish, what a Giro.

Ganna wins the stage not unexpected.

Ganna won the stage with a time of 17:18.

Hart beat Hindley by 39 seconds and takes the Maglia Rosa. Kelderman holds the third spot. First Vuelta GC win for a British born cyclist.

The Vuelta was a nasty stage with Jumbo having a horrible day.

The overall standings are now:

Carapaz
Carthy +18
Martin +20
Roglic +30

Jumbo just fell apart and Roglic was alone for far too long. Kuss finished the stage 10:18 off the lead (69th place) and dropped way down in the GC to 22nd.

Ineos had a great day, winning the Giro and moving into the lead in the Vuelta.

am biased because he is a local kid, but brandon mcnulty is racing his first GC this year at the giro. he had a lot of success as a junior and solid results after turning pro.

he rides for UAE and is a very strong time trialist and climber (even though he says he isn't). the giro should suit him because it has 3 ITT's.
Solid showing for your boy

Are there any races left after the Vuelta? I know the Vuelta is always the last grand tour event of the year but are there any other events on the schedule that will be covered on TV? Or do we need to wait till January 2021 and the down under tour.

Also 2021 will be an interesting year because of rescheduled summer olympics.

Summit Finish today in the Vuelta. Could see some changes in the GC with less than 3 minuets separating the top 10 riders. Less than a minuet the top 4 riders.

Yesterday didn’t see much change in the GC except Valverde gained about a minuet on the GC moving up to 9th place overall. Michael Woods of Canada took the stage. They faced two cat 1 climbs yesterday, the front group saw lots of action the peloton not as much.

Today’s final climb features a 8.3 KM ascent with an average gradient of 9.2% with a max of about 15.

Should be a day filled with some action in the group of favorites.

edit: about to hit the final climb of the day, the race about to come back together. The breakaway has been caught. Should be a day for a GC favorite.

I love mountain top finishes! I also love it when you really can't tell who is strong and who is not.

Rog get a win bonus and time on Carapaz who finished second.

Carapaz
Roglic +13
Martin +28

Sepp had a good race, thought he might win for a minute but ended up 8th 54s off.

Re more racing with the Hell of the North canceled I think the only thing left is Il Lombardia which AFAIK is still on. This has been a wild ride, nothing for so long then a whole season in what seemed like a month with freakin' overlapped grand tours. I both loved it and hated it.

Man Rog was impressive today. I suspect he will contend for the overall classification, but Carapaz won't go down without a fight! Should be some fun racing.

Sepp is in a good position to take the polka or the blue and white. he may have to go into a breakaway but with Rog, in the position, he is in he may not be able to.

Speaking of position, he makes my neck hurt. He always rides with his head almost straight up all day. He never seems to look down which makes him look strong all the time but my neck would be killing me at the end of 4-6 hours. 'Course I guess that's a small part of why I pay to ride and he gets paid to ride.

Stage 9 of the Vuelta. GC unchanged as it was a sprinter's stage, the fireworks in the GC start again this weekend.

Sam Bennet crossed first but got regulated for headbutting a Trek rider twice. Bora rider Pascal Akermann took the win. Bennet had been caught out by the headwind and was farther back than he should have been, he put in a hell of a sprint though.

Another sprinters stage but the uphill sprint saw Roglic ride away with another win. He had 3 seconds on the field but apparently, that isn't enough of a gap to award the time so with the won bonus he is behind Carapaz by 3 seconds. IMO this makes a total of 7 seconds they have robbed him of. I suppose the win bonus makes up for it.

Back to the mountains tomorrow!

ETA they changed the overall after I quit watching. They gave Roglic the 3 seconds "back" and so he and Carapaz are on the same time with Roglic in red due to the tie breakers.

Roglic is impressive and carrying this form through the tour into another three week race is crazy. This weekend is going to be hard as shite. Sunday finish is not for the weak. Angliru is a monster!

they are saving the legs for tomorrow. No change to the top of the GC, but Soler gets a bump up.

Tomorrow is going to be intense.

The last climb up the l'Angliru will likely decide the Vuelta. There is a section about 2 miles from the end that pitches up over 20%.

The Queen stage of the Vuelta didn't disappoint, albeit in slow motion. Hugh Carthy won, looking great in the last km. Rgoglic was a little off finishing 5th, ceding 10 seconds and the red jersey to Carapaz who finished 4th. Sepp Kuss looked amazingly strong and if not tending to Roglic would have taken second at worst, likely would have won. Such is the life of a domestique even a super domestique.

After the rest day tomorrow, it is a 33.7km ITT which is flat until it finishes with a 1.8km 3rd cat climb @14.8%. The next mountain top finish is the penultimate stage next Saturday which has 6 categorized climbs and finishes on the outside category climb of the Covatilla. Hopefully we have a all out shootout on that climb for the podium.

Watched the stage last night it was as expected. Just like the tour it looks like this may come down to the last couple of stages in the race. Been a fun year of cycling. Hopefully will finish with a bang!
