ESPN has an article about players who could be the next Cole (essentially middling player with high end stuff waiting to be unleashed)

Wheeler is tops followed by Woodruff from the Brewers

you make an emotional comment then get all flushed when called out on it.

If you want to have a baseball conversation, I’m game - you’re a well informed guy. However, if you want to inject your emotional girl gene into the subject, don’t get pissy when you’re called out.

Wheeler might get a 9 figure deal. Describing him as middling or under the radar is pretty hilarious

I'm just hoping the Will Smith deal and the Grandal deal grease the wheels a little bit so we don't sit stagnant until January waiting for anything to happen.

We don't need a third straight year of stagnation to continue to build the case for a work stoppage in a couple years.

It feels like there’s a lot of teams/front offices with more urgency to win this year. White Sox, Reds, Phillies and Padres again, Mets, Angels, Rangers, plus disappointing finishes for the Yankees and Dodgers last year.

There was a lot of action last year prior to the Winter Meetings. The Winter Meetings itself was underwhelming. I don't think draft pick compensation will play a big part in the hesitancy of free agent signings this year as it did in the past. It just feels like the playing field is a bit more level and teams will be willing to do what it takes to separate themselves from the pack.

There was nothing emotional about what I typed 3 pages ago. That's been how thAt particular fanbase has acted since the news broke. Yourself as well, and it was in response to WGA and his comment.

They are going by results, and even with all his hype and stuff he results haven't been fantastic.

Cole was worth 8.9 WAR three season prior
Wheeler has been worth 7.6 WAR both in using baseball reference...
quote:

The Pirates liked to emphasize two-seam fastballs down in the zone, the better to generate ground balls. The Astros encourage their pitchers -- especially those with good velocity -- to throw more four-seam fastballs up in the zone, the better to generate strikeouts. Ditching his sinker wasn't the only change Cole made. He also started throwing his slider and curveball more often -- which also helped produce more strikeouts. Here's his pitch selection percentages with the Pirates compared with those with the Astros:
quote:

Pirates, 2016-2017
4-seam fastball: 48.7%
2-seam fastball: 13.7%
Changeup: 8.6%
Curveball: 11.3%
Slider: 17.6%

Astros, 2018-2019
4-seam fastball: 50.9%
2-seam fastball: 4.2%
Changeup: 6.0%
Curveball: 17.3%
Slider: 21.6%

quote:

Wheeler is not a perfect match for Cole. Most notably, he missed all of 2015 and 2016 with injuries, including Tommy John surgery. He went 23-15 with a 3.65 ERA over the past two seasons with the Mets with 374 strikeouts in 377? innings, numbers that line up with Cole's final two seasons in Pittsburgh
quote:

Four-seamer: 918 pitches, .241/.309/.341, 29.4% strikeout rate
Two-seamer: 946 pitches: .297/.331/.484, 17.2% strikeout rate

Even though Wheeler's four-seam fastball was the more effective pitch, he threw the two-seamer more often. A team like the Astros might look at those numbers and advise Wheeler to throw his four-seam fastball more often and perhaps unlock some of that upside.

Yankees i highly doubt make a big splash with Cole or Strasburg. I wouldn't be surprised on Wheeler though. Yankees probably looking to trade for a piece instead.

The Mariners and first-base prospect Evan White are in agreement on a six-year, $24 million contract with three club options, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN.

White, 23, spent last season at Double-A. No player at that level ever has received a long-term extension.

Rather than the expected $17.8M qualifying-offer salary, Jose Abreu will receive a $5M signing bonus and $11M salary in 2020. He'll make $16M in 2021 and $18M in 2022 per the terms of his new three-year, $50M deal. He also has full no-trade clause in 2020 and limited one in 2021.

I saw Larry Walker has a higher career WAR than Jeter does in like 700 less games played.

wow I hope you don't think that is an argument against Larry Walker being one of the greatest all around players in baseball history? Not hitters, players. Even though, he is one of the best hitters ever. Its a general consensus amongst greats of the game that he is up there on the most talented players ever.

Walker played about 30% of his career games at Coors.

Yankees about to get into an ugly battle with Jacob Ellsbury as they are trying to withhold his 26 million. Apparently, he wasn't doing what team doctors wanted and was doing rehab on his own without team approval. At least that is their case, if they can get the remaining balance dropped it certainly opens up more possibilities of taking on money.

I think the Angels will spend big on one of the big name pitchers. They have to get some pitching somehow since they can’t develop it. Is Ohtani going to pitch this year or DH still?
