Yes. They have foam filled fuel cells in them with roll over check balls. However in a violent enough of a crash they can leak some. Nothing is totally indestructible.

Are we sure that was fuel and not something else? Seems like if that’s gasoline, it would have ignited.

When you watch the wreck it didn’t look all that bad. I could see why he said that

It may just mean no post-race driver press conferences.

I was a huge Dale fan and raced. The whole thing was slow motion for me. His spotter asking him if he is ok. Telling the crew the net wasn't down yet. Side note, Dale never said anything after he wrecked. Spotter would always say when he pulled net down.

Why would one mic be bad?

Told my wife earlier that this would bring out all the twisted SOB's with a smartphone. Not surprised.

Amazing it didn’t all go up in flames. For those that follow the sport more, are there some safeguards in the car/fuel for fire?

Yes and many of them

The fuel tank is put in a rubber bladder cocoon of sorts, it’s very rare for fuel to leak out after a crash and that in part shows how bad this crash was

They have fire extinguishers that the drivers can deploy though I doubt Newman was able to do that in this case

Denny had his already. One microphone means one speaker, no questions, to the point and over.

In Schrader's book that came out in the late 2000s, he briefly discussed that day. He said when he dropped Dale's window net, he knew it was bad, but that Dale was still alive and actually spoke to him. He went on to say that he told the family what he said, but no one else will ever know.

They told M Waltrip as he was going down back stretch after checkered flag.

Mikey didn’t know anything was seriously wrong until Schrader came and talked to him in victory lane

Can anyone provide a link to this? I thought the common thought was with the type of basilar fracture he had it would've been instant incapacitation

Yeah, he didn't qualify or didn't have a sponsor or something like that, but at the last second he was able to take someone else's spot.

I forgot the details but he was almost not even participating, but then died in a horrific crash. One of the worst I'd ever seen.

He won the Indy 500 that year on the turn 4 wreck by JR Hildebrant in the last lap. Only had funding for the 500 and it was a fairytale story @ that point.

Then in order to drum up excitement for the final race of the season and sell more tickets, I believe the race promoter offered $5 million dollars if Dan could win the race from starting last, so he put together a ride at the last minute and we all know what happened next. So sad and tragic.

The more recent death of Justin Wilson (indycar race @ Pocono in 2016 I believe) the press conference and news wasn’t released until the next day.
