He recognized the severity of the wreck immediately when to us non-racers it looked just like any other wreck.

DW probably heard the scanners. I was there. When Mike Skinner tell Childress "somebody needs to get Dale Jr and Teresa, this isn't good", you know it's bad.

They told M Waltrip as he was going down back stretch after checkered flag.

Dan Wheldon. Killed at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2011.

Yeah, he didn't qualify or didn't have a sponsor or something like that, but at the last second he was able to take someone else's spot.

I forgot the details but he was almost not even participating, but then died in a horrific crash. One of the worst I'd ever seen.

Watching the replay. Open fires and a clear puddle of fuel leaking underneath.

Amazing it didn’t all go up in flames. For those that follow the sport more, are there some safeguards in the car/fuel for fire?

Yes. They have foam filled fuel cells in them with roll over check balls. However in a violent enough of a crash they can leak some. Nothing is totally indestructible.

I have one from ATL in the car I am building. Not cheap.

It was sad. Poor Ken Schrader was choking back all the emotions as he was trying to speak.

Schrader was in the infield care center, and at that time the drivers were just taken behind a curtain, not into a room. Richard Childress (Dale's car owner) yanked the curtain open and asked Kenny what the deal was. Kenny just responded that it was bad. Richard asked him "Do you mean like we're going to be out for a while?" and Kenny just responded, "No, Richard, we've got bigger problems than that."

He also locked eyes briefly with Dale Jr., who had gone to the care center to check on Dale Sr. Jr. said it was really then that he knew that it was really bad.

Some sketchy reports coming out that he's conscious. Nothing worth linking yet.

He was given a spot in the field as a challenge to go from worst to first. He only had seat for the Indy 500 that year and won.

Had the potential to make a boatload of money if he won. Knew the potential was about impossible.

Few contributing factors, but nothing glaringly bad.

Seems like Press Pass is about to kick off soon. Water on the podium/table.

Yeah, when Richard couldn't get Dale on the radio, he asked Mike Skinner, then Dale's teammate, to stop at the scene and see what was going on.

"It's not good..." Don't know how many times he said that, but he was biting his lip each time.

Water has been there all along. But, they've zoomed in on the table.
