I used to live within walking distance of track, so I gambled a lot. But that was 20 years ago and I'll be honest that I barely follow horse racing these days, if at all. I thought it was a good call, for the record, but I'm not gonna claim a ton of expertise. But there's on thing I truly agree with:

quote:

One thing to fix the Derby is to no longer allow 20 horses.

The Derby has allowed the field to get out of control and there's too many horses that, frankly, have no business in the field just hoping to get lucky. It creates a dishonest race in which the best horse rarely wins due to the rough ride. They really should be looking at a reform to get the field down to a manageable number.

When Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby, he raced against 12 horses and it was considered a large field back then.

When he won the Preakness he raced against 5 horses.

When he won the Belmont he raced against 5 horses.

Who knows if Secretariat's brilliance would have been bottled up if he was forced into a bad trip because the race had become a Calvary charge.

You shouldn't have a Derby where you need an extended gate. Where the starting line is rail to rail.

This is what the Derby is looking like the past 20 years.

You would lessen the prospect of fouls and disaster if you had a more manageable field.

I've had several discussions with so called race fans about this weekend. They act like they've been a racing fan forever but then they all say, in one way or another, that these DQs have only started in the recent years once replays became popular. Really? And you say you're an old racing fan?

For the record, my was not involved so that does not sway my opinion. I believe the right call was made. The whole 20+ minutes I was swearing that there was no way the stewards would have the gonads to do it though. When the call was made, my jaw literally dropped.

I also said it was a clear foul but there’s no way they have the balls to do it. But they did.

My dog knows more about horse racing than the POTUS.

80's changed polo and bettin ponies forever.

Before the agents took over looking for quick scores on Arab buyers it was a business but a gentlemens business. Greed indeed eventually kills all it corrupts.

Well shite.

Still a pretty good field assembling.

Ugh. Nevermind. Code of honor not going. I liked his chances a lot.

Overwhelming sense of guilt.

Or the fact that horses today seem to need 4 weeks to come out of any race

But if it makes you feel better to think guilt you just go ahead. It’s cute.

It was only a joke, not an opinion.

Sorry.

If you can’t tell I’m getting very over the whole thing. There are people who actually think that.

14 would probably be perfect.

The best horse actually wins a lot. The favorite has won the last several years in a row. Would have happened again but for the DQ.

How is it dishonest? The best horse led wire to wire in this derby. And as pointed out above, the favorite has won most times. How is that dishonest?

How can you say that?

Hell! I’ll let Tyler tell you

“At that point, we had just started to make our initial run and I had plenty of horse.”

I side with Aspy on the single gate

I do think two other things would help

#1 No "buy ins" just to get box on Derby Day
#2 Limit trainers to 1 or 2 horses
(if you have 4 horses you can use them to advantage a single challenger)

Think of the Tour de France if it helps better understand using 4 to beat 1
