20 horses is too many, just asking for an accident

I’m not sure I can find it now, but you did call an unlikely winner earlier this week. I remember

But nothing happened. No horse was hurt. Nor a jockey. I agree that your scenario of multiple horses and riders down would be bad. But that didn’t happen here. The DQ was unnecessary.
Everything you’re describing as bad for the sport will still be at risk in the next race. You can’t avoid it on an open track with multiple horses competing.
If the foul would have been egregious ( plain to the naked eye sans slow mo replay), I wouldn’t bitch. But this was simply racing. I don’t see how you prevent the horse from reacting to the crowd noise or some other factor.
Every time the gates open there is a danger of horses and jockeys getting hurt. You just hope the cameras aren’t on when it happens.

About a decade ago I was at a live basketball game and the refs were letting things go. One team was clearly dominate but they had the luxury of being the home team. About midway through the first half I leaned to the person with me and said if they did not make some calls somebody was going to get hurt. Sure enough, just before half the dominate home team was unnecessarily rough on a team that could not keep up with them and one of the visiting teams players wound up with a torn ACL that ended their season and their career.
Refs came back after the half and finally got control of the game but it was too late.

Well said. Context is important. The Ricky Rulebook’s on here don’t get that part of it.

I tried to find this again to link it but had no luck, but I read an article this morning that said that there have been similar instances to what Maximum Security did in the race yesterday in past Derby's and that things like this happen in nearly all Kentucky Derby races. The article even had examples from past years. Rarely do you have protests though because it's understood that it's going to happen due to the larger than normal field of horses and things like crowd noise, etc. It's almost unavoidable. And when there have been inquiries/protests (ie. Monarchos) it's never upheld. This is why I think the "nothing happened to the horses" argument is valid for the Kentucky Derby. This isn't some maiden or allowance race at the Fairgrounds. It's the Kentucky Derby. There should be different rules because there is no race like this one. Unless it's egregious there shouldn't be a DQ for "impeding another horse" as what was claimed against Maximum Security. How do you not impede another horse in a race this size? Nobody was beating Maximum Security yesterday. Also, like I said earlier, if Maximum Security was trained by someone like Bob Baffert or Todd Pletcher rather than Jason Servis there probably would have been no DQ.

The people who are complaining that the horse should NOT have been taken down obvisiously do not know horse racing and the rules of horse racing plain and simple.

If you watched the race and saw how far he popped out it was not like previous Derby's. Add in bad weather and potential the jockey has done it before and you need to make a statement.

Dude, I'm not a professional and I felt I identified 2 potential fouls by that horse in less than 2 seconds. I had exactly zero surprise at any challenges and the DQ.
Now, I thought he just might have lost a place or 2 (or 3), but other than it being the derby, I had zero surprise at the result.
And the rules are in place heavily for safety. Now, might the jockey have been right and the horse just did WTF a 1200 lb horse was going to do? Sure. But the rules are the rules.

I get that, just traditionally, this is a huge race and THE race for 3 year olds. Hell, it's THE race for "once-a-year" horseracing fans, but cutting it to 16 or so makes sense to me.
16 is still a lot. The fact we had so many big horses in that race yesterday makes 20 seem an even bigger number.

The horse that Maximum Security swerved in front of was War of Will, yet the group for this horse didn't even protest. The protests were filed by the jockeys of horses that weren't even affected by Maximum Security and stood to gain from the horses DQ. Again, as someone stated earlier, there are rules and then there is context.

I still don’t understand spent most all the time yesterday talking to jockeys and trainers and not owners.

To be fair, there is little a 110lb jockey can do when a 1200lb horse wants to do something. They grab the reigns, and try to pull back.
I've seen a jockey standing up in reigns, pulling as hard as he can to slow a horse down, and the horse did what he wanted, jockey was just a passenger.
And an out of control horse can be penalized...
