No big successes but no catastrophic failures either. Tried grad school and realized it wasn't for me, took out a loan but paid that off extremely fast. Could be doing better but also not really hurting.
I have learned that I can learn and use new skills extremely fast and that formal education on some aspects is a joke.
Wife and I are nearly about to make a major move, fully farm, in which we want to 3x the current productivity. I've always told people to bet on themselves, whether that be in starting a side hustle, business, or career change. I realize it is probably time I take my own advice. It is going to be hard to leave this lower 3% interest rate on the house. We need to make the move.

Get rich slow has been my mantra. Started investing around 21. Spending less than I made for many years allowed me to consistently invest. Have had some big winners (AMAT, AAPL, Goog, NVDA), but low cost index funds over many years are my bread and butter. Got into real estate with stock market money and have done really well there, too. I have had the good fortune of getting nice bonuses and stock incentives thru my main jobs and almost always kept that money invested instead of spending it. Worked for me! I look back and am thankful now.

Just realized my biggest was buying a house ten years ago. The house has more than double. Bought for 225k now worth over 500k

Great story. Congrats to you and your family. I will say that we have done the opposite and started a family later in life and it provided us an opportunity to save and be financially secure when the increase in cost came. Either way, do whatever works for you.

7% per year? Nah, your 401k has done better than that.

Marrying a smart business minded woman who makes good money.

401k will be for sure but since I’m still pretty young compounding hasn’t exploded yet. In a few years the 401k will def be my biggest success. M expectation is in retirements I’ll be pulling 10k-12k a month with no debt. Now if I just look at 401k and include the amount I put in the value is more

Has yours doubled the past 10 years? I’m doubting that most have.

Homeownership. Also should factor in holding costs such as property tax, repairs and maintenance what is the true financial return?
After factoring in those it’d be hard to beat an S&P index.

I’d be interested to chat with you and hear more about your story. I love stuff like this!

BC…what’s your return percentage on money invested for the companies you’ve sold?
I’m in similar boat. Started a biz in 2016, started 2nd biz in 2017 (had to fire a partner and dissolve), started 3rd biz in 2018, started 4th biz in 2022 and started 5th biz in 2023. We’re selling 1st and 3rd for a really big return. More than I ever thought I’d have. Cool to hear other similar stories.
Business is the best way to get ahead. I tell young ppl all the time. Most folks are just too scared or been brainwashed their whole lives by the education>get a job>save your $ advice from their friends and family. It’s not easy but investing in yourself is the most rewarding thing you can do from a career/financial achievement standpoint.

Do you have any related resources you could share with a young dad trying to earn extra income?

Why?
Average annual return on S&P last 10 years is over 12%.

No, my real estate has not doubled in 10 years, it's done more than double. I'm not sure what that has to do with what I said above.
If 7% a year is your biggest win, you really just keeping up with inflation.

What has been your biggest success in investing?
1.Bought a bunch of real estate after the 08 crash. Some properties have 10xed since I bought them but i would say the normal is a 3x-5x since 2008. The 10X is really just luck since I bought in Huntsville and then it blew up.
You younger guys can't imagine how easy it was to make money in real estate back in 09-11....You could get on the MLS and a buy an almost livable house for $20,000
2. Started buying Bitcoin as a gamble in 2016/2017. Studied and learned what it was in 2019. Sold off most of my real estate and used the money to buy more Bitcoin over the last 5 years.
As another person mentioned above, my highest ROI has 100% been small business. I lost money in the business for the first 3 years, pivoted from private sector to government sector and we exploded.
