I guess if you were French or something it could be 500M since "mille" is thousand in French.

You obviously don't understand the rules....there can only be one winner in this Battle Dome.

They are both correct.

We actually used to use 500M for 500,000 and 500MM for 500 million in our financial reports until a few years ago.

Well that just makes things unnecessarily confusing.

I always thought that the M in 500M was for the Roman Numeral, not for the French word. But 500M, 500k, 500 G's, all correct.

I seriously doubt it is for "mille." The roman numeral makes some sense.

For shite's sake, 500k, 500M, 500B, etc. No point in making things overly complicated.

I guess if you wanted to sound like a big dick you could say .5M instead of 500k. It'd be similar to instead of saying your package was 3 in., you could say "quarter of a foot".

Yep and it does create confusion.

An example of M being a thousand is MMBtu for million btu's. MM being "thousand thousand". In other circumstances M can be million.

LINK

I think its funny that if you follow the link, the very first site listed is this thread.

It just keeps you going in a circle. Similar to the game for idiots that says "flip page to other side."

In the bond business 500m is 500,000

1mm is 1,000,000

M is, as noted, for mille is thousand not only in French but in Latin, Italian, and the other Romance languages.

K is short for kilo, which is derived from the word for thousand in Greek.

But in America we speak Enlish, dammit, so I'm going to start using 500T.
