According to a notice posted late on Friday night by Customs and Border Patrol, which is responsible for collecting tariffs, smartphones, along with routers and selected computers and laptops, would be exempt from reciprocal tariffs, which include the 125 per cent levies Donald Trump has imposed on Chinese imports.

The Trump administration had already exempted several sectors from its reciprocal tariffs, including semiconductors and pharmaceuticals

Looks like we are quietly moving into the theater phase of these tariffs as they are slowly removed.

The ultimate parlor trick occurs when tariffs are removed from all the logical sectors, but remain on unnecessary products because their lobbyist funding is inadequate.

fricking stupid, as I said from the start, while rebalancing trade is the right thing to do, the approach Trump took is dumb as hell.

From Chat GPT

"The Art of the Deal" is Donald Trump's negotiating strategy that he has used consistently for decades. Here are the key elements:
1. Start with an extreme position to create room for compromise.
2. Use attention-grabbing statements to control the narrative and put the other side on the defensive.
3. Create a sense of urgency to pressure the other side into making concessions.
4. Keep the other side guessing about your true intentions and bottom line.
5. Be willing to walk away if the deal doesn't meet your standards.

Art of the Deal…except China didn’t cave or renegotiate anything. As of now it looks like Trump blinked first.

1. Tear up the existing framework.
2. Restore existing framework under a different name.
3. ???
4. Claim credit for everything good that happens.

Not sure it’s that effective when everybody knows Trump’s tactics, and understands economic complexities on a much higher level than Trump.

Should’ve taken their time, developed precise targets, been surgical with their weapons, etc., but as always Trump’s people bumble around, talk big, then tuck talk.

Trump made tariff moves with US and North American manufacturing not built out enough. A massive buildout program is needed before the hammer can truly come down on the Chicoms.

I am sure some yahoo on an internet message board is privy to what was or wasn't negotiated. This board has gone to shite.

This isn’t art of the deal, because this doesn’t accomplish anything on your list. This is “oh shite, my tariffs as written will crush the four largest American companies by capitalization on the stock market” backtracking. And for the record, I applaud him for that. It would have just been nice if he had started with his head not in his arse instead of having to pull it out.

It’s kind of funny seeing people fight so hard against this being “backtracking” or “caving”

I actually think it looks better on Trump than if he kept the foot on the gas all the way off the cliff.

I’d rather have a president that can see shite isn’t working and adjust, but that’s just me

Agreed.
Plus, I think Bessent is scared to death of the way 10 year notes are trading.
QE at this point would be wildly inflationary.

Didn't do the best on this one. But kind of couldn't since he's not playing with his money.

All in all, what would have Kamala had done if she was President? Absolutely nothing but make our position infinitely worse.

The world economy, of which America is the leader, cannot be managed like a casino deal in Atlantic City. It’s one thing to bully and bluff lenders and the GC into a better deal. It’s another to deal with the Chinese who in my experience are uber capitalistic despite being communist. We look like a joke.

I do believe Lutnick and Bressent are talented, capable people who should take the lead in tariff negotiations going forward. I also agree with Elon that Navarro is dumber than a sack of bricks and should be made the fall guy of this mess.

Trump is about to see some approval numbers and Navarro is going to be scapegoated bigly. I bet we’re not even talking tariffs in 45 days. Elon throwing him under the bus might have been setting the stage.

Do they? I mean everybody is still asking the question whether the tariffs are a negotiating tactic or is he really looking to bring manufacturing back to the US? Is he trying to erase the trade deficit or is he trying to bring in revenue so he can cut taxes?

So he most certainly still has everybody on the ropes with his intentions.
