I’m in St. Tammany too. Wife checked assessor’s website a week ago and it was showing our taxes actually going down by like $100. I just looked and it’s now showing them going up almost $500! I guess this is what happens when we vote for no taxes like 10 times for the jail and courthouse. Crooks are gonna find a way to keep the money flowing!

No way my home value increased 36% because of Covid and inflation.

What year did you buy your house and how much did you buy it for?

There is an assessment petition period where you can contest the assessed value of your home..

Home values are inflated from 4 years ago no doubt. Don't be mad at the assessor. Part of his job is to assess home values and set the millage rate.

It is your elected officials on the Parish Council's job to apply the mils and set the budget. They have the authority to roll back mils and keep your owed taxes flat!

ETA: The school board plays a large part in this too. Their millage is most likely higher than the parish millage. The school board would need to be intentional about rolling back millage as well.

Millage rates were rolled back. That’s why we figured we were going to see a decrease in taxes. We live in BFE in what little bit of country is left in St. Tammany. We don’t live in Covington or Mandeville. Very little has changed other than our home getting older. It’s hard for me to believe the value of our home has gone up that much.

Check your assessment for the taxes. I just got a letter mine went up 36%

Did some research, and my neighbor- same style house, .25 acre larger lot, 30 square foot less house, was $60k less than mine in value.

Spoke to the assessor, and within 2 hours called me back and brought it down to match his… per square foot.

Shout out to Jeff Taylor, Livingston Parish.

I thought i would just be getting angry and have somebody to take it out on, but he was great.

He also told me to make sure you call anytime the value goes up to check on square footage… the data gets input manually, and mistakes do happen.

Keep voting Democrat.

And keep working and paying taxes. All the “less fortunate” are counting on your generosity while they sit at home.

On the Northshore, definitely use an independent insurance agent. There are very few insurance companies that will even insure you just based off of where you are. It doesn't hurt to check the major companies as well, but most probably don't write in your area for wind and hail.

Wrong. Many agencies wanted to remain revenue-neutral. They rely on the assessor to determine the mils they need to be at to remain revenue-neutral. The assessor botched that really bad and gave most a 30% increase by not rolling back enough so they are able to enjoy the same increase.

I would recommend strictly voting NO for any tax increase or renewal. Make them go down without question!

Look at the bright side. A 60% increase in property taxes prevents undesirables from moving in, unless they rent. However the cost would just be passed on to the lessee.

Although I am skeptical in how the money would be used and end up, the parish would be able to make noticeable infrastructure upgrades. At least that's how it should work.

All of you live in hurricane alley and it's the government or politician's fault you have higher home insurance tax?

overall its worse in LA, but insurance and taxes have sky rocketed everywhere.

It's the biggest hit we American citizens are taking on inflation that no one talks about.

Yes if they are pocketing the $ or spending it on BS. If they are putting it to good use like roads, drainage, police, and general beautification its fine.

Someone wealthy who lives in Covington told me years ago that he pays $X in property taxes which was a high number at that time, and he pointed out issues while wondering where the money was going. He had a point.

They'll just use the money to give themselves raises (to pay for their own property tax hikes).

Oh, and to hire their brother in law.

As the nutty inflationary driven values of houses slows we are seeing local governments raise the values of the properties they rest upon - at least in some places in Texas.

These taxing authority fackers never miss a beat.
