Question: My wife and I invested $700,000 at the end of 2021. After a little over two years, our valuation is down $35,000 — and we have never been in a positive valuation. Is this normal considering the volatile market the last couple of years? Should we stay the course or is there something we should be doing to help our portfolio move in the other direction? Is it time for an adviser to help us with this situation?

How can people not at least be aware of what their money is invested in? It’s simple to know what funds are invested and what the market has done on average during that time period. Literally requires the bare minimum involvement. I think people expect a FA to do everything and they can plead ignorance is bliss.

…Until they wake up and realize they f’ed up and they own the consequences (not the FA).

As we all know, MOST mutual funds, retirement funds, etf’s, etc. don’t perform as well as the S&P, and..

S&P didn’t break through its Dec 2021 highs until just a few weeks ago…

There's been similar threads by posters on this board. They're so determined to fulfill the narrative that Biden = "we lost money" that they appear to have...lost money.

They probably purchased a balanced type fund right at the peak before bonds crashed.

I have no idea what I’m invested in off the top of my head in my 401k. I set that about 10 years ago and haven’t changed a thing. I’ve got a Roth with Edward’s jones and a few other accounts with them but have no idea which funds.

I can tell you what stocks and crytpo that I’m in that I play with.

2022 was a terrible year. This isn’t that surprising. I guess many people made that up and more since, but maybe they were in the wrong stuff.

Right, how does everyone forget the massive rotation into consumer staples, oil, and "value"? They could've been in Tesla or something like that and made out way worse.

My lithium mining and battery stocks since then have been completely wrecked.

Been investing for about 7 years and 2022 was by far the worst year by a mile for me. My Div portfolio actually finished up a few points but my other portfolio ended up down about 17%. Had it not been for 2022 my 7 year avg return would have been Dam strong!

Ya I made a noticeable investment at market height on like January 4th, 2022 in an index.

It took a long time for that lot to turn back positive.

A 60/40 portfolio like AOR would match that same performance from 12/21-12/23. It’s not all that surprising.

Yep. 2022 was the 7th worst year in the history of the market. And a lot of people don’t understand when you lose 20%+ in a year it takes more than 20%+ to get back to even.

I’m at around 21% for the year with my Edward Jones stuff and 5% with my 401k that I manage. Figured I’’m better off with Edward Jones.

S&P has beat both of those handily so you are better off just investing in the market and not paying Eddie

I have no idea what invest in the market means outside of having an E*trade account and buying stocks. I thought that is what I was doing by having a 401k and a Roth with EJ.

I’m down like 80% on my E*trade account that I tried to buy stocks in so I’m not doing that shite again. I rode DWAC and AMC up and didn’t take profits so now I’m way down. Thats the main reason I don’t mess with this shite and just let someone else handle it.
