Fam of 3, although he kids food is exclusively filtered through the wife.

Family spends about 500 on grocery/sundry. Another $400 or so eating out.

One thing we did that helped quite a bit. We have our personal accounts that we budget $ each month. Anytime we are not together, you pay your own way. No money comes out of the family budget. So that means workday lunches / breakfast, drinks/dinners with friends, coffee, etc.

Spend a few years schlepping your older relations from drs appt to drs appt, all for lifestyle-related ailments/illnesses, and you'd have the same perspective. The care you take of your body during the first 2/3 of life often determines the quality of the final 1/3.

The problem is that most of these numbers are estimates. If you actually started counting all related food expense in a given month, it would be more.

I think we should have a running tally thread for next month just to see stated vs actual.

That seems legit. I don't see how some people post 500 for a family of 4. That's about $1.40 per person per meal.

Groceries ~$600
Eating Out ~$500

My SO loves eating out and hates cooking despite buying organic food to cook/throw out

I just looked at the last 6 months

Highest grocery month:
$776 - December

Lowest grocery month
$651 - September

Highest restaurant month:
$724 - November (had a NOLA weekend)

Lowest restaurant month:
$419 - February

on average it looks like we are more in the $1000 - $1200 range instead of the predicted $800-$1000 range that I estimated on page 1...

You have a point. From my post I would edit it:
I forgot about Espresso at Starbucks. I don't consider that food. I consider it Medicine.

Me and the wife just started using Blue Apron. We get 3 meals for 2 at around $50 bucks. We set the frequency for every other week. Seems kind of pricey, but we'd probably go get something to eat or go buy $50 worth of groceries to cook a meal. We suck at paying attention to food spending, so for us it's a good deal. And I haven't eaten anything I didn't like from them yet.

The wife and I spend about $400 a month on groceries, and probably another $400 eating out.

I know, I probably spend close to 100/week on groceries just for me.

Plan weekly meals around grocery store sales. Shop a lot at costco and aldi. Don't waste food. It isn't that hard but it does take attention and mild effort.

That's just in theory. Doing it is another story. I don't know if you have teenagers, but those bastards are always eating. I've seen it.

The grocery bill is obscene. I'm thinking of having part of my paycheck direct deposited to Kroger to make it easier.

I'm with you on this. Lots of places to cut expenses. My food isn't one of them.

USDA Prime, everyday, all the time.

Great restaurant in Moline that has certified Kobe, $20 per oz.

I have no line item for food, travel and recreation. I spend what I spend, because I could be dead tomorrow.

Having said this, my home, car, clothes etc are not large line items for me.
