I was very healthy and other then a yearly physical I went to doc less then 5 times in 15 years. Then my right testicle was enlarged. Surgery and chemo later bills were well over 100k. Was just responsible for max out of pocket. Think $2.

At $6800/yr for my portion of employer provided family health insurance, I could pay and not use for 12 years and still come out ahead. Add in birth of my son, and wife having complications during delivery, and I can go 20 years before I “lost” money.

And we still have normal doctor visits that just cost a co pay.

You never know when something big will arrive, not destroying your financial holding and starting over is well worth the cost and piece of mind health insurance brings.

On the flip side, when it happens you see all these gofundme posts with a sob story and a plea for help.

Insurance is so worth it.

I had a medical issue when I was 11 that totaled over a million dollars in 1989. Maybe it was a half million, but it was a staggering amount of money for the time. It would have bankrupted my parents without insurance.
It may have bankrupted them. The amount your family’s insurance company actually paid was significantly lower than what was billed.

I changed jobs while Little Füt #1 was on the way in 1988. I dutifully paid COBRA to my former employer. The delivery went off without a problem. My former employer merely pocketed my COBRA premiums and the bill was not covered. I ended up successfully suing my former employer and won payment and attorneys fees. My attorney told me the entire bill could have been discharged for ~$650 immediately after the delivery. The hospital got over $8,000 for it six months later as a result of the suit and delay.

So your $500k bill may have been actually less than $100k, using that same discount.

You are a round efficient peg being sledgehammered into a square hole.

This is one of the 1000 complaints with ACA before it was voted upon and why the obvious "if you like your plan, you can keep it" was a direct lie to the American people.

Congressman Joe Wilson of S.C. who actually stood up and called the promise of the ACA a lie to Obama's face when it was proposed was rebuked by almost every other one of his fellow congressman.

Not trying to be political, more a nod to how very much sledgehammering went on to "grant" us this benevolent policy from our enlightened leaders.

A. Insurance against a catastrophic financial cost.

45% - Get cancer and suddenly my family is bankrupt? No thanks.

B. Help with doctors visits and prescriptions and cap catastrophic loss but doubt that happens.

10% - I don’t go to the doctor, but I have a child and will do everything in my power to make sure she’s healthy.

C. Help me access quality care easily.

0% LOL - their website and app and whatever other bullshite is a joke. Quality care is out there, but they ain’t helping me access shite.

D. I honestly think it’s kind of a scam but I don’t go without it.

45% - huge fricking scam. Healthcare isn’t a joke, but this country sure treats it like one. Honestly pitiful for a first world nation.

F. I don’t carry private health insurance.

0% - I did this in college, post-grad, and the first part of my career when low cost / catastrophic health insurance for poor students and working adults was dragged out back and shot by the Obama Administration. frick him, his VP, and everyone wearing a suit in DC on both sides of the aisle.

A & C because I now have Medicare and a supplemental and I can pretty much access care where and when and with whom I want w/o insurance company telling me I need authorization and have to wait days to be approved. I also have a catastrophic insurance plan that had portability and I kept up premiums.
Yes, I pay a lot for insurance but it’s important to me and my spouse. After working in medical field, some insurances are not that great.

I have a sharing ministry. Cheaper and less risk of getting stiffed if I get hit by a bus.

They charge the health insurance company a high amount, negotiate it down and settle for less then write off the difference as a tax deduction.

That’s perverse.
