@baroqen I spent one night on each discussion question(2 hours roughly). there is a 250 word minimum which I wrote around 500. Your are right, the sources are the hardest part but he has no minimum on sources so I imagine the number does not matter to him as long as you use them. The only thing that requires APA is the citation and the References. Being that it is a discussion post and not a word document you cant follow the other guidelines.
SO far the class seems manageable and I hope it does not change. Aside from ISDS705 with Lin this is my easiest first week of a class in the program and I am 9 classes in. I hope it stays this way.

@DieDaily- The class he taught last year complained about the test because some had questions that were not in the slides. The test must be from the book and I am sure the slides miss some things. I always hate first test because of the unexpected.

@diedaily THANKS!!!
@baroqen I was wondering the same thing. I noticed discussion post going up as early as mid afternoon on Monday. I was like, what am i missing? Also, I too was wondering did i over think my post. It ended up being about 550 words with 4 references. But once I could see the other post, I may have overdone it. My grade will tell.

I'm feeling like I may have overdone it as well as subjecting myself to analysis paralysis. I've been spending about 2 hours researching and deciding on a strategy that is "original" and then another 2-3 hours writing and revising. I did want to write some counter arguments to some of the easier targets, but it seemed most people were being friendly and choosing to agree, so I did the same. No point starting a senseless academic equivalent of a flame war just for the class, when you can just as easily do the opposite.
I have barely started on MKT 705 because of the work for 701, but I noticed that the books have been loading insanely slow for me... and I can't download the whole thing. Moodle has also been really slow for me in general this term, which is going to be really troublesome. I'm wondering if there is some sort of network traffic issue since I'm coming from across the Pacific. Hopefully it clears up, this wasn't an issue last session.

Baroqen:
I'm thinking that you over did it. I received full credit for every writing assignment last term in MKT 710 and spent half the time you did on each discussion post. Based on what I've seen from some other students, the professor and his assistants are probably thankful to see a post that is well thought out with no grammatical errors. Don't sweat it.
Case analyses will require more time and research. Save your effort for those.
As for countering other students' "easy" discussion posts in your replies, give the poor bastards a break. Based on the information you've provided regarding your effort and time spent on each post, you won't need to embarrass others to get the marks you desire.

I agree with giving them a break. My first instinct was to go for the easy targets, but I decided to do the extra work and find a target that I could support, as opposed to counter. Like I said, there was really no point to burn someone else.

Anyone taking MADM701 with Williams? Thoughts on Exam 1?
Posted on 9/1/18 at 5:16 pm to CajunPilot1
70 people have dropped the class so far. I can't imagine its not because of the test.

@CajunPilot1 I took MADM701 with Knotts as my first class in the program. At the time, it was discussed in this forum to try to avoid Williams as the workload and exams were intense. Looks like not much has changed. Good Luck!

In general, my approach to all of the classes that I've had with the Discussion Question style grades has been to develop a stance based on the question, find 2 credible references, usually from HBR, SHRM, Forbes, or some mainstream source. I'll also check places like Knowledge@Wharton, INSEADKnowledge, and other academic type locations. Freewrite on the subject based on the information gained, shim in the sources and then proofread edit. Normal effort per discussion question is about 1-1.5 hrs.
I do my papers the same way, but I will grab 4 references, write 1500 words and follow a cookie cutter outline that directly addresses everything in the rubric. Normal effort per paper is 2-3 hrs for the 3-5 page range.
A key thing to remember is that a "good" paper in the sense of being high value may not receive good marks. However, a paper with good marks may in reality be a fairly low value work. Papers for classes are all about the rubric. If you feel the need to put in a ton of extra effort, that's great, but the vast majority of these papers are documents with a singular purpose, get a grade. Papers in the work world are intended to live on and provide ongoing value.

I am currently enrolled in FIN 720 with Dr. Kim as the instructor. I bombed the first test and feel like the presentation of information was the cause. He supplied 2 chapters to read, no more explanation than that. The questions were not structured as the reading was, the time limit was absurd, and there was no warning of time remaining. The countdown clock just went to 0:00 without letting me know. Is this normal? Is the other instructor as "hands-off" as Dr. Kim seems to be? Any info will help. As of now, I am going to probably have to drop this class and am concerned is if I take 7 weeks off, I won't want to start again.

The countdown clock issue seems strange. However, unless everyone bombed the first test because it covered material not provided in the chapters, then it might be worthwhile to go back and reassess how you went about preparing.
Regarding the course material vs the test content. There is no requirement that the structure is the same, but whatever is on the test should have been covered in the material. Some professors are more hands on, others less so. Online courses are better for some than others, you just have to decide if they are right for you. They do require significantly more ability to learn on your own, because you don't get multiple lectures every week to walk you through things the same way as in-class learning.
If you are concerned about having the motivation to start again after taking 7 weeks off, might be worthwhile to decide if this is really something you want.

That test was not designed to test knowledge or subject matter comprehension. It was designed to trap and trick you on things that really don't matter (in the grand scheme of things) and items the average person would have overlooked.

@Brandon and @dwa now that the first test is behind you, and you have an idea of how difficult the test will be, does that help you to prepare differently for the upcoming exams? Also, have the class averages been made available so you can see where you fell on the curve? If majority of the class didnt do well, I would think and hope the professor would react appropriately.
For MKT701 darrat students, discussion post grades are up.

@WDE251 yes the averages were sent out. Almost have the class scored lower than 50%. The professor said he would make some changes to the testing format, but I am not sure what exactly those changes are going to be. I will prepare differently going forward. The general format of this class seems difficult to navigate through. The reading material is released on Monday, but tests and practice tests are only open from Friday to Sunday. I would like to be able to compare this to the other FIN 720 instructors class too see if this is a normal format or just what this professor is doing.

Agreed, that first MADM701 test was hot garbage. In order to get an A you would have had to literally memorize every line of the textbook readings verbatim. It was not testing any type of actual concept comprehension, it was evaluated for how well you remembered an exact quote from an obscure figure.
And now, the second exam can't be taken without taking this "Proctorio Pretest" first. And even though there are massive bold red letters stating there is no password, there is quite obviously a password to start the exam. I've tried on two different laptops with zero success.

Same here. 1 week for a paper with discussion posts and an exam doesn’t seem like much time. Let me know if you have any luck.

Spoke with Proctorio tech support. They said that despite the big bold red letters, the instructor needs to resolve the issue and they have let the instructor know. So I guess we wait...
EDIT: It appears to be working now.
