Meeks is more desirable for sure. I missed it and ended up in McLaughlin’s session instead. Seems like she will be ok so I’m going to hang with it.

That is really awesome feeling to finish MBA with 4.0. Did you come close to miss A grade in any of the subjects ? How could you maintain 'A' in all ? Any advice for others in borderline of 'A' to maintain GPA 4.0 till the end ?

Thanks for the kind words.

The only class that I had a low A in was Fin 701. My frustration with that class is that I had no idea how what he wanted or what I was missing. My grades on the tests were 88-92, except for one 96. He just gave no feedback so I didn't know how to fix it.

The classes can be broken into two types: writing and math. The writing classes, start early and allow time for revision. The best writing is rewriting.

The math classes were easier for me because I felt at ease with Excel. Learn Excel, it helps. I generally worked all homework problems in Excel and had them ready for the test. Many times the tests were the same style problems. If you understand how they work on the homework, the tests were easier.

In regards to Dr. Vines, exactly what do you mean "you wrote out answers before the test?" Does he give test questions before the exam? How did you know the questions?

Like some other classes, his tests were based on homework problems. He'd switch up a detail or two, but they'd be the same style. Vines has this rule that he wants to see all formulas that are used. So I found myself putting way too much detail in order to get extra points. In the end, I did ok in the class, it just wasn't the greatest experience.

As Jason said, Vines encourages you to write out as much of the formula information as possible on quantitative questions. On qualitative questions, he prefers more than one-sentence answers. The bottom line is the more you write, the better chance for a higher grade. Even if your answer is wrong, he'll give generous points for just showing your effort. Don't make the mistake I did.

I wasn't aware of this when I took the 1st exam in the class. I gave very few details in my answers and didn't attempt an answer on a question I was lost on. I ended up with a 74% on that exam. I know I could have earned a grade over 80% if I'd just written more.

In the remaining 2 exams, after I'd learned what he wanted I did much better. But wasn't able to bring my grade back up to an A and finished that class with a B (88%).

Are we allowed to use notes ofanykind on the qualitative questions?

Unless it's changed, Vines' exams were completely open book, open internet, etc. The key factor is the time allowed to take the exam. It's short enough that it wouldn't allow you to look up all the answers. You need to already understand a lot of it so that you spend minimal time looking things up.

I'm not sure why people are giving thumbs down votes for many posts that are simply giving advice. I guess we have some bored clickers in this forum...

agreed with @socal there is not enough time to rely on google for vines exams. Either you comprehend the material or you don't. And he is the self proclaimed king of partial credit. So going ahead and taking the time to set up your excel formulas in advance will help in doing that.

To all first time students, good luck on your journey! To all the final term students, only 7 weeks left! To the rest of us, HANG IN THERE

P.S. who all is in MKT701-Darrat? Now that the topic material has been posted, this may not be as overwhelming of an experience as I thought. Just a lot of writing which is a nice change to my quantitatively heavy summer classes (Acct, Econ and Fin).

I'm in the class as well.
The weeks with exams and case study will be interesting.

@marco Cool. And agreed but only one topic and discussion post due those weeks so hopefully the workload balances. And with sunday due dates, that leaves me the weekends to catch up on the case if need be.

I am in MKT 701 with Darrat, were you able to find the YouTube video? I copied and pasted the title and nothing came up. Mind posting the link if so or the name of the video author? Also I wonder if we will be able to get the writing requirement for the case studies beforehand. Only having 1 week to write a 3 - 5 page paper seems short.

I'm in MKT 701 - Darrat also. First class in the program. Hopefully, this class will not be too bad.

Am I missing something? The two topics this week are the PowerPoints?

@mm268 the video played for me in Moodle. Does it not for you? What internet browser are you using?

@charheel the PowerPoints look to be it. I have mixed emotions about it. But mainly because it’s different. The slides are probably a summary of the book he use to be allowed to you

I am in the MKTG 701 with Darrat. So far so good! I've completed my work for the week already and can now focus on studying Ch. 1 and 2 for the test. If the entire course is designed in this fashion, I expect to do extremely well. This is my first course in the MBA program, so it is a relief.

I'm in MKT 701 as well, and how are you guys able to finish so quickly? I spent a ton of time on the first discussion question, am I just overthinking and overdoing it? I don't know what to expect yet, and I'm trying to finish with a 4.0 so I might be overstressing myself. I spent a ton of time trying to even find articles from credible sources to cite, and ultimately settled for 4, hoping that it counts as "sufficient".
That said, I also needed to spend some time figuring out APA citations again, as I haven't used it in over a decade. Does the entire post need to be "APA format" of some sort or just the citations? Is there even an APA forum posting format?

I used this site to help me: LINK

I don't think there is an APA discussion board format.
