You can start a business in any trade and be making this or more in a few years.

It is 10x easier to make 300k starting a plumbing/electrical/HVAC company than becoming a doctor.

You guys can't IMAGINE how dumb most of these owners are who are CRUSHING it.

Maybe eventually, but a lot of people want a person they can talk to (whether they actually talk to their agent regularly is mostly irrelevant). I’m not in insurance, but I know how well those guys do. It’s very lucrative.

I think gen x might be the last gen that wants to speak to a person and even then it’s maybe only 50%. I think products and services that can get online are going to wipeout the human rep.

No, it’s really not. Why isn’t every plumber/electrician/hvac guy starting their own business and making $300k then?

This thread makes all of these things sound way easier than they are. Most of these people making 300k in sales etc are at literally the very top of the chain - maybe not in their industry, but of all salespeople. Same for many of the other professions. Sure you want to be in a career where you can top out at 300k+, but it’s still highly unlikely in most of these fields

Statistics show this is false (when it comes to insurance at least).

Real estate if you're in the top 50-100 of any decent sized market.

Which is a lot harder than it sounds. At one point, San Antonio had something like 5000 realtors averaging $6k/year. So, top brokers and a handful of elite agents out of that.

I haven't necessarily really looked hard but plan to after the new year.

Technical sales is probably that main thing I am going look at. Commercial Insurance or Investment Advisor are others I have contemplated but I am probably to old to start down those paths.

And for the poster who said O&G engineers. If 10 yr O&G engineers were regularly pulling 300K I wouldn't be looking for something else to do.

Realtor in any market with 100k plus people in the area.

I know quite a few who pull that down regularly.

I think that however is about to change with the recent lawsuits

Just remember, $300k as a w2 vs $300k as a 1099 are NOT the same thing.

You're working for the wrong company. I've got friends who work for majors that aren't at that level yet, but good drilling or reservoir folk who have moved beyond low level engineering roles for independents are pulling down $400-500k with bonus and retention/stock. If you're 10+ years in and haven't moved into some sort of asset team lead or drilling or completions supt/manager role, you need to evaluate who you are working for or your network to understand why you may be in a lull. I left a job because I looked at the people above me and saw that for me to reach my next goal, it wasn't going to happen there till later in my career and found a place where I could reach that goal faster. Drilling/completions or reservoir for an operator are probably the easiest to reach those levels. Not going to happen in most production or facilities roles easily.

You are mentally retarded if you think the act of plumbing and starting a plumbing company are anywhere near the same thing.

I made an obscene amount of money this year in construction and don't know ANYTHING about construction.

A successful business owner hires people to do things that he does not know how to do.

I would love to buy a trade business but my lack of knowledge scares the shite out of me. I don't know anything about plumbing or HVAC or even running a business. Where do you gain the skills to start

Partner with someone who does if you want to buy.

Buying gets you money much faster but it carries more risk than starting from scratch and building.

The lowest risk stuff are trades you can use cheap and unskilled labor for.

For example, anyone can start or buy a fencing company and you can be an expert in fencing in less than a few months of studying and practicing in a random field.

I am not talking about your neighbors fencing project. That is very little money.

7 figure fencing contracts are EVERYWHERE.

This is actually the next vertical I am moving towards as our company grows because it is so hard to frick up.
