How much of a PITA is it to sell your vehicle privately?

Try Carvana or carmax. Offer is usually pretty close to what you’d get elsewhere and they will just come pick it up at your house

I've never sold one before outright, just traded in while buying another. I'm about to buy a truck from my parents and need to off load my current one. I know value of time is different for every person, but is it worth the $3-4k between selling to a dealer vs selling privately? I'd imagine I would need to pay off the note to get the title before I list it, constant messages from potential buyers, then there's going through the precautions to make sure I'm not getting scammed with a bad check/fake money order. I just went through some of this with selling a camper but ended up having a relative buy it so it made the actual sale much smoother.

I’ve sold 3 and didn’t have any issues.

2017 Audi S7 I sold to give me the VIN because they smoked BMW on trade price. They even did an in and out at BMW for me so it saved me around 5k on taxes by lowering the owed tax value of the car I was buying by around 50k.

2017 F250 I sold to my brother and he did an in out out and lowered my taxes burden by 57k so saved me 5700 on taxes. Brother got a smoking deal at the time because used 5 year 250’s were going for close to 65k to 70k in 2022.

2013 G37 I sold to my buddy who owned Tricare and he gave to his daughter so it was someone I knew and trusted so it was easy and no hassle. Not sure

Not sure where you’re located but it was either Toyota or Nissan on airline heading towards Gonzales and they actually smoked everyone’s price on my 2017 Audi but they were not willing to do an in and out with BMW so it would have cost me about 2k more due to the taxes.

I've sold several privately- all cash deals with the title in hand. You'll come out ahead financially, but it can be a hassle dealing with people who want to test drive it, negotiate/lowball, or scam.

The last one I sold though was through CarMax. It was super quick and easy, and I felt like I got a fair price, especially considering my truck had a few issues.

Really comes down to whether you have the time and patience to deal with some hassle in exchange for making a little extra money.

Just did it 2 months ago posted it on facebook with only my friends being able to see it and that way I had some type of connection to whom I sold it to possibly. It was posted for maybe 30 minutes people saying they wanted it. Sold and out my driveway the next day!

Just sell it yourself, it's really not as hard as some people are making it sound. Don't play around with people, you have to have backbone. Tell them your firm price before they come see it and ONLY deal in cash or venmo, zelle etc.

Instant Cash Offer on KBB. It's kind of annoying because they send it out to multiple dealerships, so you have to field phone calls from salesmen that want to buy your car, but it also pits one dealership against another and puts you in the drivers seat.

Carmax, Carvana, DriveTime should also all give you cash offers. Take the highest one, or use those offers against the above KBB.

I sold one to someone I knew.

We looked at Kelley and Edmund’s and found a price we both could live with.

He brought a cashier’s check.

This isn’t true. Carvana pays less for a car than they sell it for. Meaning if you list yourself you’ll get much closer to what Carvana will sell it for than what they’ll pay you for it.

With that said, I’m never selling a car myself because I don’t want to deal with it.
